    Hi eveyone,

i was running on really low tank the other day when the check engine
light came on. I am pretty sure that the gas cap was not loose but
through searching the newsgroup I saw that the several people
mentioned low gas volume as well. So I filled it up with 87.
HOwever, I am contionuing to ahve aporblem. The egnine light does not
come on until 20-30 minutes into driving. I changed catalytic
onverter about a year ago. I drove 5-6 times since it first came on
so I am assuming by now the computer would reset it if it was a
problem. Any suggestion s before taking to the mechanic? Should I
reset the computer again by disconnecting the battery?

    Many thanks

You could, but it is easier to reset the computer by pulling the "Backup
fuse" in the fuse box under the hood (right next to the battery). Leave
it out for 10 seconds before purring it back in.

Your car is OBD-I. A loose gas cap will not set an error code.

I would strongly advise checking the ECU error code. That's what your
    mechanic will do anyway.

With the ignition on (but the engine OFF), pull the carpet back in the
pasenger's footwell and count the blinks from the red LED. There may be
long and short blinks, then a longer pause as the sequence repeats. Report
    back here.

Are you sure? On my '94 Civic you have to pull the carpet back in the
passenger's footwell and find the service check connector. Short the two
pins with a paper clip or similar and then turn on the ignition. Now the
check engine light will flash with the trouble codes.

    He's right Tegger.

Your thinking of the OBD-0 setups, 88-91 Civic/CRX and 90-91 Integras.

Wasn't sure when the changeover occurred.

Well I am not sure how to do the stuff you suggested, but I can tell
you that reseting using back up fuse did not help. After filling up
the tank full and driving for about 30 miles, the check engine light
came on again. Interestingly, my dashboard was also acting as if the
fuse blew when I started the trip and then 2 minutes after the check
engine light came on, it lit up as well as if I replaced the fuse. As
far as I can tell there is no differnce in the drive
or gas milegae. I guess trip to the mechanic is necessary after all.
