hi...a couple of weeks ago my stalled on the freeway and refused to
startup again..it was turning over but refused to start....i had the
distributor, rotor, and plug leads replaced and now it is going
again...the mechanic reported that when he took it for a test drive the
oil light went on intermittently but then went off during the
test....he recommends i have the engine overhauled because of the oil
    light...

is this neccessary?? it it will cost alot of money and how many
kilometers should i get after it is overhauled..my mileage currently is
282k....it has never had any work on the engine done before....i have
had it for about 10 months now...also they needed to throw oil down the
plug lead holes to get it started...

    ciao!

The oil light coming on can mean a bunch of things: It could be that
the oil pressure sensor is bad or bad oil pump or that your engine
needs serious work, just to name a few.

If they had to squirt oil into the plug hole to get it started, it
could mean that some or all cylinders may have bad compression. That's
usually serious work. Did he tell you why the overhaul is needed?

It would be impossible for us here to make any kind of definitive
statement as to whether you need that work done or not, unfortunately.

I wouldn't recommend getting an overhaul because of a flickering light, but
it would lead me to perform more tests.

Do you have compression test results for this engine? It should be maybe a
half hour's worth of labor to get them. That will tell you the state of the
rings and pistons. The oil light sender could be defective. A better test
is to hook up a test gauge, for a numerical reading. If you do have low oil
pressure, then worn bearings is one possible cause.

Are those 288k kilometers or miles?

as advised by others, you need to do more testing to find out what's
wrong. if the engine is bad, unless you have access to a high quality
machine shop that doesn't charge for parts or labor, it's much more
economic to replace this motor than to overhaul - buy a used japanese
import engine and have that fitted instead.

ok thats 288 kilometers...i'm taking it in for a checkup next week or
tomorrow...i think the sooner i know the better it will be....the guy
said i should get an overhaull cause the oil light indicated that my
engine wasnt getting enough..when i take it in for a check-up i will be
    requesting the compression test..

thanx for the input...r there any other tests that i could do??
