I tried the thickest brand of oil that the Honda dealership sells, and still had oil leaking. I didn't think this would solve the problem since it was supposedly leaking in multiple locations, and the car hasn't been well taken care of, but used a lot. It spent several months in the hot Texas sun and traveled a few times up and down the US, from Seattle to Texas. I'm reluctant to spend the $700 quoted for the main seal, so I might just wait and see if I continue using a better sealing oil if this will help my problem. Regards, --tj
it's not thickness!!! it's seal conditioners. seals need to be flexible. proper conditioners do that and also swell the seal very slightly. [bad conditioners swell a seal too much and it quickly wears out.] it took about two weeks to take effect for me. in this situation, i wouldn't use the honda oil, i'd use gtx or gtx high mileage.
Thus spake jim beam <> : I love Castrol GTX. Honda guys hated it. They also said that 20W50 was too thick for Tejas summers, even the way I drove the thing.
heavy oil doesn't compensate for heavy mechanical loading. if you're pushing the envelope, you're better off using something closer to manufacturer spec, but spending extra on a quality synthetic. you'll get [a little] more power too because you're not fighting the viscosity.
