Excessive Play in Shifter

I have a '91 Civic with the 4-speed that seems to have excessive
side-to-side play in it. This can't be a sign of anything good, but what IS
    the problem?

    Thanks!

  4. Can the bushings be replaced with the tranny in place by going through the
    shifter hole?

At the bottom of the shift lever, under the leather cover is a set of
bushings. They're external to the gearbox and a dealer can sell you a
set of new ones for not too much. They're a little hard to get at
since they're right above the exhaust pipe, but nothing you can't fix
    yourself with a little patience.

All the bushings are done from underneath. I've only ever done the shifter
ones. For the shifter one (which causes a buzzing in 2nd and 4th), remove
the bolt, turn the lever 90deg, and have at it.

The bushings elsewhere I've never done, so I don't know how hard it is.
It's those other ones that cause a vagueness (more than usual, that is) in
    the shifter's feel.

Here's a scan from the factory manual, in case it helps:

My shifter bushings are making noise now, and I plan to replace them in the
    spring, with photos.

BTW, my PCV valve has recently stopped clicking when the hose is squeezed,
but there's no oil being pumped anywhere yet. I wonder if it's stuck open?
I've been having a bit of a problem with a rough idle in cold weather and
this may be the cause. Next oil change I'm swapping it for new. Photos
    soon!

worn O rings in the shifter, usually the heat from the cat. converter melts
them, esp. after the heat shield falls off.

Easiest cure would be a new shifter and shifter bushings.

I have a 91 STD Civic I'm junking out, dunno how good the parts are.

  12. That's a good plan. The photos should be quieter than the bushings ever
    were.

The bushings in the shifter wear out. You can also get urethane linkage
bushings from Summit Racing to firm things up.
