wait til 7500 miles, but if you have to, just do it every 5k. easy to
    remember.

    Well, 7600 *is* after 3600 ;)

Here's my dilemma (well, not really). My Civic has 2000 miles on it currently,
by mid Oct it will have about 3000. I am planning a 3000 mile road trip mid
Oct, so I plan to have the oil changed before the trip, rather than after.

Actually I was thinking both. Is there any problem with continuing to change
oil at 3000 mile intervals as I did with my 82 Prelude? I know today's engines
are different, and I don't want to do any damage (but I'm sure my mechanic who
I've been dealing with for 20 years would let me know).

Won't hurt your engine. Will hurt your wallet. It's not so much that
modern engines are different as that 3,000-mile drain intervals
haven't really been necessary for a long time now.

Wait a sec. Haven't I read here that Honda puts special additives in the
first batch of oil, and that's why the user manual recommends that the
first oil change be at 7500 miles? Why ignore the manufacturer
specification?? As Mike says, highway miles are easy on the engine.

Nope, not in the schedule :)

    Abe,
You took this way out of context. The previous poster was asking if
it would hurt to CONTINUE to get oil changes every 3,000 miles [for
the life of the car] as she did with her 82 Prelude. My response had
nothing to do with the FIRST oil change.

    Ron,

    This was Acertaingirl's original enquiry:

"Here's my dilemma (well, not really). My Civic has 2000 miles on it
    currently,
by mid Oct it will have about 3000. I am planning a 3000 mile road trip
    mid
Oct, so I plan to have the oil changed before the trip, rather than
    after."

So the first change was intimately connected with the interval.

Wrong. I replied in line, so that it would be clear that I was
responding to the immediately preceding statement.

I'll recap the context for you:

Acertaingirl first asked when her first oil change should be. She then
indicated the 3K road trip, and subsequently indicated that she was
considering changing the oil every 3K miles as she did with her old
'lude, including before the trip, at only 3K miles (thereby defeating
the special properties of the first batch of oil), but she didn't want
    to do any damage.

You indicated that changing the oil every 3K wouldn't hurt her car.
Maybe it wouldn't do damage, but if she took your advice at the first 3K
the engine would no longer be protected by the special additives of the
first batch (assuming there are indeed special additives). Hence my
post, suggesting that she follow the manufacturer's recommendation for
the first oil change, not your assertion that it was fine to change at 3K.

The only way you can say I took your post "way out of context" is if
you didn't reread the thread, dude. Have trouble admitting you're wrong?
It's not a big deal, you know. ;-)
