Acertaingirl first asked when her first oil change should be. She then
indicated the 3K road trip, and subsequently indicated that she was
considering changing the oil every 3K miles as she did with her old
'lude, including before the trip, at only 3K miles (thereby defeating
the special properties of the first batch of oil), but she didn't want
    to do any damage.<<

This thread seems to have taken a life of it's own :) Anyhow...I decided to
get the first oil change after the road trip, then do a change every 3000 miles
after. Thanks for all the info (and discussion!).

This is directly from Honda's website:

Why should I wait to change the oil the first time?

Your Honda engine was delivered with an oil that is specially
formulated for new engines that have not yet developed their "natural"
wear patterns and may contain minute particles from the manufacturing
process. American Honda strongly recommends this special oil be left
in the engine long enough for these wear patterns to develop, usually
until the first maintenance interval specified in your Owner's Manual,
based on your specific driving conditions.
