Before you condemn Fram filters, I just thought that you'd like to know that my OEM Honda filter --Made in Japan, says Made by FRAM! If it's good enough for original equipment for Honda, it's good enough for me!
You sure it's Made In Japan? Canadian OEM filters are made in Canada by Honeywell's FRAM division. It will not say FRAM anywhere on it. You likely have a 15400-PLM-A02. What does your VIN number start with? 1,2, or J?
if it was supplied to honda spec, and it has the honda logo on it, go for it. otherwise, it's not worth paying the same money as you pay for a much superior filter in a different brand - with potential reliability/premature wear problems to boot.
They're not the same, trust me. The OEM parts from Fram must meet the automaker's specifications. The store parts from Fram are sometimes broken or misfigured.
Funny! I just returned two Honeywell (Kaz) home air purifiers because they didn't work even the slightest bit. It looks like Honeywell has diversification in the non-functional filter market. I wouldn't have purchased the air filters if I'd known that Honeywell, AlliedSignal, and Fram were the same.
To be fair. Frams built to Honda spec do look like better built filters, with more filter area, thicker case, better anti-flowback valve, etc. But I still don't use it. Just like I don't use Honda's brake fluid made by CCI either. It's Castrol GT Low Moisture Activity (LMA) Dot 3/4 for me.
Fram web site http://www.fram.com/ lists "Extra Guard", "Tough Guard", "Double Guard", and "Extended Guard" for my 1999 Honda Civic. Any idea which one your car has? Earle
I just picked up one of those custom-fit oil filter wrenches (attachment that goes on a socket wrench) at the parts store. Looked at the Fram filters they listed for my '02 Accord and they are different-sized filters than the Honda-branded ones that I get from handa.com.
i use whatever quarts i find cheapest at autozone, but i change the fluid every 3 years, religiously. filters? $2 walmart super techs.
cap wrenches suck. they wont fit every possible filter id use, most of the time. i gave up on em and got the wrench that looks like pliers.

I change my brake fluid one per year every year, so I don't give much of a shit what goes in there. Me? OEM Honda. Only. About $6 US.
I was using one of those pliers, but it was a hassle getting to the filter. The end cap was only a coupla bucks (less than the cost of a filter), so it was worth it for me (fewer headaches - aspirin costs money, too :þ ).
You can cut this a bit, US$4.94/filter: http://www.handa-accessories.com/accmaint03.html I just ordered the 6-pack for US$24.66 last week (along with 6 oil drain plug washers).
