Also, company cars get the snot beat out of them. They never last. My
last company car, a Taurus, had to be traded in at 220,000 mi. ("it
might start getting unreliable" they said).

My current company car, another Taurus, is at 189,00 mi. now, & they'll
probably make me turn in that one too at ~220,000 mi. next year.

Bastards. They should buy some quality vehicles that last next time.

Whatever. I'm going by personal experience.
We've owned lots of other cars. The only foreign car that we had a major
problem with was an old Audi Fox.
4 Acura's Only 1 problem with the Legend after a major accident. Insurance
company insisted on using aftermarket parts for the repair.
1 Mercedes airbag problem which Mercedes fixed for free even though the car
    was out of warranty.
    2 Mazda's no problems
    3 Volvos no problems
    6 Hondas no problems
    1 Isuzu no problems
    1 Mitsubishi no problems
    1 Nissan no problems

The only reason any of theses cars were traded in was because we wanted to.
All, except for the 2 Volvos had more miles than any of the American cars we
    had.

  3. Maybe so, yet we run hundreds of "American" cars in our fleet and this
just never happens. Most run way past 100K.

  4. Horse Hockey!

I had one (89) that required 3 transmission rebuilds in 190,000.

    New alternator 4 times.

    Air conditioning work EVERY year.

It caught on fire somewhere around 190K. Luckily I got it out in
    time.

Oh and the f*ing timing belt broke like clockwork at 55K miles....

You should have just pulled it out of the garage and let it burn.
Not every Escort was great, just like not every Camry is great.

But a lot of Escorts go a long ways.

  6. Nah...it was in the driveway.

I 'gave' it away after that....

btw I take damned good care of my 'wheels'. It is just that you HAVE
    to with American junk...

My Toyotas are a dream compared with the American Iron I've owned.

    Very boring these Toys....

At the end of January I picked up a Jag x-type with 3200 miles from a
relative. I bartered my 1992 Taurus with over 100,000 very hard New York
City miles on it to my mechanic for some work on my GMC truck. He serviced
the car for the past five years and promptly gave the car as a present to
one of his brothers without so much as changing the oil. The kid took their
mother to Florida and back in the car and they had nothing but compliments
and thanks for me upon their return. The only conclusion I can come to is
that Ford makes junk but not everyone recognizes it, or that possibly the
reputation of Japanese cars is a bit exaggerated.

  8. Nothing like an intelligent comment. <G>

And people wonder why nobody takes their comments seriously.

  9. Right!

I think the Fusion looks GREAT! It's really a nice car.

None of my last 4-5 cars have been what I considered the best looking
in the class. In fact, if some of the Japanese brands could hire some
Detroit designers, we may just get offered the perfect car.

I would LOVE for the Fusion to turn out to be a long term, reliable
car. It's really a sharp ride!

    He can't prove that by me. I own a four FMC models, a '41, '64, '71 and '83
with 100K to 300K on the clock, that all look and run great. All purchased
new and all provided the proper preventive maintenance. Perhaps he bought
his used and did not properly maintain them, may account for his biased
    opinion.

For whom does your wife work and what are her duties, that she would be
given such diverse types of vehicles? I owned a fleet service business that
operated in six eastern states and I never of such diversity.

    2. how do you account for the age profiles of vehicles in junk yards?

she's in sales. The cars were all turned over a 60K. The vehicle choices
    changed every couple of years.

Obviously our friend Wade is a Honda owner and blowing smoke. He has no
idea what he is talking about when it comes to the longevity of today's
vehicles. Most corporations give their vehicles, like most of the other
"tools" used in their business, the best of maintenance. Down time costs big
money. Because of federal depreciation tax laws, corporations generally keep
their vehicles in service for five year or 300K WOF.

I might add from my years in the fleet service business I can tell you, with
the exception of the 'courier' companies that buy a lot of Korean cars, few
corporations by foreign cars because they are less cost effective over the
time they must be kept in service.

get by with a small sedan?
