I have a 96 Accord EX 4 cylinder. I took it in for an oil change and
the guy told me I am missing a heat shield. He told me it is not that
important except if I hit anything metal underneath the car and it will
cause big problem. Now that I try to find that heat shield and discover
that there are a lot of them underneath the car and it is supposed to be
a Honda dealer order parts. I try to find the guy back at the oil
change place but he no longer work there. Anyone know how many heat
shield is under the car? Can you give me the part name or number?

    Thanks a million!!

The heat shield is to shield the underside of the vehicle from the heat
coming off of the exhaust system. That's all, it does not protect the
vehicle's underside from damage from items struck by the vehicle.

Thanks for the advice. Now you mention it, I did hear a rattle noise before I
lost the heat shield. I guess it is not an important part that need to be
replaced. However, can anyone tell me how to order that part? I call the
local Honda dealership and inquire about the heat shield for the exhaust pipe
and he told me there is no such part listed. Please help.

    Thanks again.

What does the oil change guy know about the heat shield? I think you are
taking way too much importance to it, I bet now you feel like your car will
brake down in any minute. Heatshields prstect your car from the heat, not
the pipe from objects on the streets.

Stephen, you work for a Honda Dealer? Or are you just that fluent in the
    parts? I need a block...

Yeah, Greg. You are so correct. That flimsy little piece of aluminum won't
stop any kind of serious debree. I once heard of a woman running over a
starter that had come off another vehicle. It came up through the
floorboard and killed her. Another good reason not to tailgate, I'd say.

I'll bet you were saying to yourself, "Finally, that damn noise has quit.
    Must be my lucky day".

That's true. I had my old Civic in to the dealer for service and I told
them there was a rattle under the car. They removed the heatshield and said
it was not needed. Problem solved.
