I have a friend who was driving his 6 year old daughter in his 95
Miata. Miata provided a "disable" switch, which was approved by DOT.
He had to start the car, press the button and then she could get in.
And the disable was switched off whenever he turned off the ignition.

I think many cars with only a front row were equipped with this prior
    to the weight disabler.

Regular-cab pickups had the same thing.

Here's the text of an article by Car and Driver's Patrick Bedard on that
    subject:
    <http://www.thefiringline.com/forums/showthread.php?t=26327>

The actual article was up on C and D's site until very recently, but it
seems to be gone now. This is all I can find.

A bit dramatic, don't you think?

They also require a highly flammable liquid to be put in a tank in
the back... gallons of it!! Oh the humanity!

The gasoline requies a source of ignition. The air bag HAS the source
    of ignition.

And, contrary to the movies, gasoline is actually a little hard to set
off. Yes, match. No, cigarette. No, bullet.

Air bags have been confirmed to have killed stupid mechanics, car
theives and junk yard scroungers. Note the word "stupid".
