I have a nav unit c.2002 from Civic etc which I am trying to power up
on the bench. I have connected all the power connections correctly (I
think) to the 20 pin connector but it will not power up at all, it
    seems completely dead.

Do I need to connect some kind of security device to this unit to make
it spring into life as I notice pin 6 is marked as 'SEC-IN' anyone know
what this is and do I need it?

If I do need a security device how can I get around this?

''Sec In'' is just a short to ground inside the stereo. If you unplug
the stereo from the vehicle's harness the security system says "Hey, the
    stereo is missing"

Read this too, regarding the security CODE:

Yes. Go to any dealer with proof that you haven't stolen the
car such as a title or registration and they'll look it up for you.

The codes are all different to make stealing less attractive.
The dealer can get the serial number for you, it is unique, so don't
loose it (or share it as it will not work.)
