Honda Civic Speedometer not working after replacing VSS

I have a 1994 Honda Civic Ex automatic coupe.

About 3 years ago my check engine light came on and my speedometer
would only work once in awhile (everything else on the instrument
panel worked fine). It would randomly start working and then randomly
stop working while driving. I replaced the VSS and the check engine
light went off and the speedometer worked once again.

A few months ago the speedometer started acting up once again, only
this time the check engine light did not come on. Initially I
purchased a rebuild VSS so I thought maybe that was the issue so I
replaced the VSS once again with a brand new one. It is still only
working randomly after installing a new VSS.

Any ideas on what this could be? I don't seem to have any other issues
with the car other than the speedometer not working.

    Thanks.

The symptom you describe above could be caused by the following:
    1. faulty power or ground system for the meter itself
    2. increased resistance in the VSS circuit; between the meter and the
VSS. (Because you say there is no MIL on or DTC stored, a short to power
or ground on that circuit is unlikely.)
    3. faulty meter

Probably a connector not fully seated or a loose wire.
