About 5 years ago I was told that Fram made them. Now I hear that Fram
no longer does. If not, who? What's the proven difference? Data?
What's the best rated filter for Honda overall...OEM or otherwise?

Canadian-market Honda OEM filters have been made by the FRAM brand for at
    least 14 years.

AlliedSignal (then the owner of FRAM) took over Honeywell in 1999. The FRAM
brand was then made part of AlliedSignal's Honeywell Consumer Products
    division.

US ones come from several sources. Filtech, for example.

Other than studies where various people have dissected various filters to
see what they look like inside, there exist ZERO actual ASTM
flow/filtration/durability tests of ANY oil filters ANYwhere.

    I use the Canadian OEMs.

  4. I usually agree with TeGGeR but not re. Honda OEM oil filters. Once
Honda went to the tiny tea-cup design (to make it easier to spin them
on) I decided Honda was more interested in things other than engine
longevity. I now use Purolator oil filters (usually PurOne) which seem
large enough to hold sufficient media for 5000+ miles. Yeah, I'm
probably deluding myself (like TeGGeR says, where's the data?) but IMHO
those new Honda filters seem more appropriate for lawn mowers than
    automobiles.

Consumer Reports took apart a bunch of oil filters maybe a decade ago. At
the time I believe Fram sucked.

They never did a TEST. I checked.

Several months ago a moderator and former mechanic cut open a bunch of
filters and put the findings on the Honda Element Owners Club site:
    http://www.elementownersclub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=12206&highlight=oil+filter+survey

Turns out the newest filter for the Element and others is not as high
quality as the one previously and they're hard to find. There's almost a
black market to find those old (A01, I think) filters now.

no need for a black market: just buy the denso filter shown on this page:
