I just had the recall done for my 03 CRV. I also bought 2 quarts of Honda
oil 5-20W from the dealer at $2.50/each. It is not bad but I saw the label
said it is made by Exxon/Mobil with designed/spec by Honda so is it really
much differences if you bought from Exxon/Mobil brand?

    Thanks

  2. Maybe, maybe not. I'd guess that the only difference is that Honda's
specs don't include additives that aren't needed by Hondas. Exxon/Mobil
is a pretty good brand. It's not like Fram filters where the absence of
Honda's specs means that you're getting quality control rejects.

The Honda 5W-20 oil may be a synthetic blend, in which case it would most
closely resemble Mobil's Drive Clean _Synthetic Blend_.

may i ask what the recall was about? was your car automatic transmission?
was it related to the "parking" issue?

i am going to get my new cr-v03 in a few days.. it's a standard
    transmission.

It is an automatic and something about the shifting cable, it may get
corrosion. The thing I really upset is I bought it in 8/1/03 and no fix even
the recall already out. I check with Honda website and got the message said
no recall and few weeks later I got the notice from Honda !!!!

Honda, like very other manufacture concerned about its customers,
does a voluntary recall when they find something
that has shown not to be up to their build standard. They recall
the effected vehicles to fix those that have the
problem. Usually it is a free fix as well. I would be more
concerned about a manufacture that do not recall problem vehicles
but try to hide the problem by only fixing those serviced at a
dealership like Mitsubishi and to some extent Toyota, like they
did with the oil 'gelling' problem before finally extending the
    warranty on the effected engines.

    Mike,

I agree. I had one bad experience with my GM Olds Delta 88. It had the
steering problem with steering when the car is cold (winter time). GM did
not recall and "extended warranty" if you knew or someone told you. The time
I found out it is too late since I already had car more than 5 years even
low mileage and I had the problem less than 5 years but when the winter was
over the car was fine. If I knew it or at least they told me I would be able
    to fix it.

Most 5W20s are a blend of Group II or II+ base oil with a varying
amount of Group III mineral oil in them. Now, depending on who or
which company you talk to, Group III oil (hydrocracked crude) is a
synthetic oil. i think it is merely a very stable mineral
    (conventional) oil.

I'm almost positive that Mobil's Drive Clean blend is a Group I or
Group II oil with some PAO (Group IV) in it ... maybe 10-20%.

You can't tell an oil's base composition from a $20 used oil analysis
but you can discern a few details about the additive package which
*may* help you figure out who made it.

Take a peek at this analysis of Honda 5W20:

Also, Canada's version seems a little different:
