I'm considering this Honda civic 1997 with 60k miles on it.
edmunds.com reviews are great but I'm not sure if there are any recalls
on it. carfax.com gives conflicting information.

I see following on one of the pages:

    Recall date: 10-15-1997
    Units potentially affected: 9,558
    NHTSA campaign number: 97V193000
Defective part or component: INTERIOR SYSTEMS:pASSENGER RESTRAINTS:AIR
    BAG:FRONTAL:pASSENGER
Description: Vehicle Description: Passenger vehicles. The front passenger
air bag modules have been improperly assembled. the cloth flaps covering
the folded air bag may have been tucked in too far. This condition could
prevent proper deployment of the air bag. In a crash, an improper air bag
deployment could increase the risk of injury to a front seat passenger.
Dealers will repair the front passenger's air bag module to prevent this
    problem from occurring.

But I'm not sure If this particular vehicle is affected. Any way to make
certain? If I do take this car to mehanic would he be able to make certain
that vehicle is ok. Do I just tell him to check the airbags.?
Here is the rest of the carfax.com report. Would someone please kindly take
a look at this and let me know if anything looks suspicious.

    Thank you very much

take it to a dealer, dumbass or use one of them thar new fangled
    phones.

They'll perform the service for free if it is applicable to your car.

Call any Honda dealer. Give them the VIN number & they can tell you if
there are any recalls that apply and whether or not they were ever performed
    on that specific car.

Recalls should not be a concern. If there are any outstanding, any/every
Honda dealer is required to perform them for free.

There's an even easier way to tell if the fix has been done for the airbag
recall the OP refers to: If the repair has been done, there will be a
center-punch mark above the second character (the H) of the VIN number
that's stamped into the firewall in the engine compartment.

    No mark, no fix.

    Recalls do expire!

That's true. They do expire if they are configured for xx many years or xx
many miles & some of them have a material effect on the worth of the car. I
personally would not touch a 2000 Acura TL or V6 Accord that fell under the
transmission recall/ warranty extension if the warranty extension has
    expired, for example.

On the other hand, we're talking about a '97 Civic. If it has survived 12
years and counting without having received some particular recall, it
    probably wasn't important anyway.

In any event, a call to any Honda dealer with the VIN number should resolve
whether there are any outstanding recalls for that specific car.

My 96 Civic had, IIRC, three "major" recalls, and one "piddly assed".
The latter was "driver's side floor mat could slide forward."

The major ones were a seatbelt release issue, an emissions issue
(which came with a free tuneup including plugs and wires) and one
having to do with the rear seat latch (coupe) sometimes not latching.

The emissions one had a mileage expiration, but no date, and the
    others had no expiration.

Approximately 75,000 years ago, the supervolcano Toba
erupted, In 24 hours, it ejected enough material to fill
the area inside the DC Beltway over a kilometer deep.
    Good idea, bad timing,
