Ignition Switch

Discussion in 'General Motoring' started by Wolfgang Bley, Dec 13, 2003.

  1. After we rebuilt this '85 CRX and tried to "turn it over" but the starter
appeared to be dead (The battery is OK) . Took out the starter and it check
out A-OK at the local automotive electrical shop (including the solenoid).
They suggested seeing if we had a "signal" from the ignition switch to the
starter. We had intermittent signal and now no signal at all. The harness
appears to be OK (continuity test) so I assume it is the ignition switch
itself on the steering post. This small item is over $70 and before I buy it
I just want to be sure I am getting the right thing. Any thing else I should
test or try before we go to this expense? Thanks for any help in advance.

Using a long wire, one end to the positive battery the other to:

    1. Ignition switch -before (input) then after (output.)
    2. Nuetral/clutch switch -before then after.
    3. Closing clutch/nuetral switch & crank each time.

These are the things you should test before going to the expense.

  4. I got a used "ignition switch" from a local junk yard and got signal to the
starter but it still would not crank. It HAS TO BE THE SOLENOID..I took the
starter back out and took it to a different shop to test and in fact it was
a bad solenoid. Got a rebuilt starter put it in...NO GO!!! I gave up and put
the dashboard (switches steering wheel etc.) back together in hopes of
having it towed to a garage. BUT I tried to turn it over just "ONE MORE
TIME" and I heard the solenoid make a little noise and then it did in fact
crank over. This is a rebuilt engine so I cranked until the oil light went
off (spark plugs out) then put the plugs in and it started in under 2
seconds on the FIRST try! YES!!!!! I have to fix the head lamp and will post
for help on that in a second. Thank you all for your time and information.
