KREX Graphite used in dealer oil change.

My wife took our '98 CR-V to the local Honda Dealer for an oil change.

I noticed on the invoice that they added something called KREX
Graphite lubricant at an additional cost of $4.98.

Does anyone know anything about this stuff? I usually do the oil
changes myself but occasionally we'll have the dealer do it - they've
never used KREX in the past.

I can't believe Honda would recommend using this product. Is it a
dealer money-making scheme? Should I be concerned about it in my CR-V?

    ALL dealerships use it.
    Added to the engine oil.

Needed, I doubt it, but no harm was done.

Would classify that one as a maintenance scale version of the "vehicle
etching fee" and "customer service fee" I realized I'd purchased with my
    Accord.

That is the kind of thing which would have me never go to that shop again.

Honda owner's manuals routinely advise against using additives in the oil,
yet dealers do it to filch a few more dollars out of your pocket.

Either learn to do it yourself, or find a competent independent mechanic you
    trust.

Let's just say this: techs who use it can keep the Krex bottle caps and
    turn them in for cash.

Krex has a little scheme going on here...

We don't use any additives at our dealership. Honda strongly recommends
against using oil additives. Call customer relations and have them contact
    the dealer with your complaint.

I doubt it will do any harm, but I wouldn't be happy about the $4.98

When it comes to oil changes, I would be a little pessimistic. During my last
    oil change at the dealership,
I observed the mechanic closing the drain plug before all the bad oil drained
    out. If they're willing
to leave the gunk buildup from the bad oil, I wonder what else they're willing
    to leave in the engine.

Everything old is new again. ARCO used to sell ARCO Graphite motor oil,
which was motor oil with fine graphite particles mixed in. I wonder if Krex
is being run by ex-Arco sale types ;).

ARCO stopped making Graphite Motor Oil because it polluted the
environment. I used to put ARCO graphite in my engine. It worked
    great.

I used to design face seal. Carbon graphite is used exclusively in
this application where lubrication is marginal.

Make sure the graphite could pass though the filter. Other than that,
    it does not hurt.

If your engine is designed properly, all the mating surface should be
oil lubricated and the hydrodynamic film is present. However, it is
not always the case especially during start up or hot. In some areas
such as valve seal, the oil film is not always guaranteed.

Did KREX guaranteed the the KREX graphite will not clog the filter? If
it does, then it may do more harm than good.

How do you know? Did you strip the engine down to see?
Did you tear down an identical engine that had not had
graphite in it at the same milage and compare?

Krex Graphite is a non chemical lubricant used excusively by new car
dealers. The graphite is less than 1 micron in size and only 6 oz are
added to your oil change. The dealer adds this to your oil change to give
you Roadside Assistance and Road Hazard Tire Protection for 120 days from
the date of the oil change. The product is nothing more than 10 weight oil
with a little bit of graphite added. It was delveloped at Packard Motor
    Car back in the 40's.

Mechanics have a name for additives of that sort.
    They call it "Mouse Milk".

snake oil. shit. crappala. pure dealer profit. WTF is has to do with
roadside assistance or tire protection, i dunno.

mebbe roadside assistance will be needed after it clogs the oil galleys
    and the cam siezes?

Stay for away from these kind of dealer profit producing additives.

Honda says not to use them ... but dealers go ahead and do it because it
makes the service area more profits.

    Just say no.
