I replaced my license place bulbs. The bulbs remain lit until I close
the trunk. What gives? Thank you.

    Is this a Honda?

    If so, what model/year/engine/bodystyle?

How forcefully do you shut the lid? Have you tried just pushing it
    down until it latches?

Did you originally replace the bulb because it was "burned out"? Did
you look at the bulb to see if it actually was? I know I don't, but
if a second bulb dies so quickly, I start looking at the sucker. I
know with house bulbs, we look at them to see how much metal was
spattered on the glass, or how badly broken the filiment is.

If you close the trunk VERY GENTLY and VERY SLOWLY until it latches (push
it to latch with the heel of your hand), is there a point at which the
license plate lights shut off? Or do they only shut off when you slam it
    shut as usual?

Do the license plate lights go off at the same time as the trunk light goes
off? Drop one of the rear seatbacks so you can see the trunk light's glow.

The red and license plate lights shut off about five inches BEFORE the
trunk latches. I have an appointment with the garage Friday
(2/27/2009). I’m bracing for an expensive fix!

concur. especially given the latest revelation that "The red and
license plate lights shut off about five inches BEFORE the trunk latches."

anyone that can observe that, yet /not/ figure out that there is a
wiring problem, and it's somewhere on the loom that connects the trunk,
should indeed stick to the passenger seat.

I promised that I'd provide results when subject was fixed. Mechanic
indicated that wire was broken. Wire was soldered. Works fine. LESS
expensive than expected. Thanks to all.
