Loose rear view mirror?

Discussion in 'General Motoring' started by Boyd Speerschneider, Dec 13, 2003.

  1. Hello,

    I own a 1993 Honda Prelude.
Its rear view mirror is very loose and falls off if I mess with it very much.
Is there a way to fix this?

    TIA,

    - Boyd S.

Do you mean it's loose where it bolts to the roof, or loose where the
    mirror attaches to the stalk?

If it's the roof, pop the cover off and tighen the bolt inside.

If it is loose where it mounts to the roof, the bolt under the cover may be
loose, or the circular spring that holds it to that bold maybe have broken.
If it is loose in the mirror part and is snapping off the ball on the shaft,
it may have broken the anchor for the tension spring on the inside. Some
people have had luck taking it apart and bending the spring to "re-anchor"
it in the hole left by the by the original anchor. If that fails, Honda has
a repair kit with a new spring and anchor plate, for like $10.

Pro: Easy fix, Con: Must be permanent. I've taken mirrors off their cases
several times. Some easy some not possible. Some are just outright dangerous
    caused by sharp prying tools.
