Loud roar after timing belt replacement

It is hard to describe a sound but that what I hear: a very loud
roaring sound that develops after 2000 rpm. Sometimes it sounds like
    a tractor trailer.

It all started after the timing belt replacement.

I know I am guilty: I bought OEM timing belt but stop short on buying
OEM balancer belt. I bought the cheapest for 10 dollars vs. dealer's
    25. May it cause the noise?

I did not torque the pulley right (did not have torque wrench at the
    time).

When I look at the pulley it looks like it wobbles a little. No more
    than 1mm.
So I rented a torque wrench from Autozone and planning to torque the
pulley to the correct torque this weekend (181 ft/lb).

Will it help me to get rid of noise or should I live with it till the
    next belt replacement?

99 Accord LX with 74,000 miles. The car is 96 month old and the
maintenance schedule calls for timing belt replacement at 84 months.

Any ideas or suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Check timing belt and balancer belt tension. Might be too tight.

    Not likely.

How did you remove it? You may have bent it.

Is it fully seated? It can wobble if it's not on all the way.

Did it come off on you after installation?

    Egad, they're tight these days...

Check the belt tension. Too tight and the belt will snap and so will your
    wallet.

    Thanks, Tegger,

I will recheck the tension this weekend. I guess I can do it with
only the top belt cover removed?

For the pulley it came off without any problems. Once again I will
look at it this weekend and report back when I am done.

    Thanks again,

    Sam

If you know what to look for, yes.

When you push down hard on the timing belt between the cam pulleys, there
should be about 1/8"or so of give. If there is no give at all then the belt
    is too tight.

Checking tension on the balance belt requires removal of its cover.

Or the belt could be too loose! At higher RPM, you could be getting
vibration from the belt flapping at its longest point around the
    pulleys.

Your balancer belt may not be properly aligned. I made the mistake last
year on my 96 Accord. I had to redo and balancer belt.

    Thanks everybody for replies!

I check the tension of the timing belt before closing covers and It
looked all right to me. I will recheck it though.

Could you please explain your statement about aligning balancer belt.
Before reassembly it looked good. Properly tensioned. Gear marks on
the front shaft were at place. Rear shaft was locked.

The only weak point was the crank shaft key that wanted to travel too
deep inside. So I just aligned it flash with the end of the shaft.

  9. doesn't sound right, the key can only go so far back. Are you sure the
    pulley is installed correctly?

There is only one way it can go. Isn't it?

But I will double check it.

    Thanks,

I am LAZY, LAZY, LAZY, LAZY!!!

    I am ashamed of myself!

The balancer belt was installed 180 degrees off TDC. I most likely
made uneven number of revolutions of the crankshaft and then installed
    the balancer belt.

Everything is fixed! Hopefully I did not ruin my engine.

On the good note: the second time it took me only 45 minutes to get
to the belts. The experience matters!!!
I hope that somebody when searching will find this thread and will not
    make the same stupid mistake.

Thanks everybody for ideas and support. Thanks for the help!
