My 88 Prelude has 195x60x14 tires. Will 225x60x14 tires fit without
modifing the car? Will the 225's effect steering and/or safety?

  2. That tire is way too wide for your wheels - basically unsafe. When you go
wider, you also have to get a lower aspect ratio to avoid increasing
    overall diamater significantly - see
    http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

Also check out www.tirerack.com for tires/wheel sizes for your car.

I wouldn't go wider than 205 on the OEM rims. But then, the correct plus zero fitment would be 205/55/14, and there are practically no tires available in that size. You could also try 205/60/14 if you don't mind throwing your speedo and odo off by 2%.

Generally, the wider the tires and the lower the profile, the more succeptibility to tramlining. If the roads in your area are bad, that's definitely something to consider. Also, wider tires will take an additional toll on your steering pump - not sure if it was designed to handle something like 225 (especially if very sticky) for a long time.

    Cheers,

Thank you for the excellent answers.
I believe I will gracefully decline the 225 tires and stay with the 195's.
