Having grown up in PA I think that practice comes from two factors -
one, very very short on ramps dating back to pre-Interstate days (PA was
one of the first states to introduce modern high-speed roads, and
unfortunately there have been a few minor design changes for the better
implemented since those roads were built) and also the near-universal
practice of putting up stop signs (?!?!?!) at the end of onramps in
construction zones - and sometimes in non-construction zones as well.
It's been a good 10 years since I lived there, but I remember one onramp
in Squirrel Hill (neighborhood of Pittsburgh) that I detested, getting
on I-376 heading towards Monroeville, there was a stop sign at the end
of a short acceleration ramp and then you had to merge over two lanes
instantly to go through the Squirrel Hill tunnels. Quite an adventure
when traffic was flowing freely on 376! I don't know if it's still like
that or not, it's been a few years since I've been back. I have to
admit, I usually blew off that stop sign, bad bad nate.

Heh, my "ancient" car is way faster than my "new" one :)

Seriously, though, perhaps growing up in PA and having to drive my mom's
Renault Encore until I bought my own car might be a factor in my
proclivity towards, ahem, adequately-powered machinery :)

Yes you should use consumer reports.
In 1985 I used it to select my Mazda 626 which was highly rated. My
neighbor, who I just met was going to purchase a "Black rated" Peugot.
My 626 was with me a total of 3 years. 2-head gaskets, 5 relay switches
for the power windows a broken sun roof, and a car that would "stall"
    while driving on the highway.
My neighbors Peugot is still running at 200,000 miles. He has needed new
    tires though.

experience and opinions of a real user

    2004 Accord

    Very Disappointed

Full of Rattles and more Rattles in the interior - so far 3 trips to dealer

    Multiple problems

Driver seat slips out of place - so far 2 trips to dealer

Seat cover replacement on order - for over 1 month - seat cover defective - not
    replaced yet

Strange squeeling from the engine compartment

Airbag replaced - now extreme rattling and glove box door is shaking

    I would not recommend.

    Hope this helps.

Ya, I had some issues with my 04 Accord. On certain road surfaces,
interior door covers would buzz like you were holding an electric razor
against them. Dealer padded it a little which helped...eventually most
    of it went away.

    It was pretty comfortable though.

I just got an Accord Hybrid from Perry Motors Mark Medora in Bishop.
What a great experience and NO markup and no BS! The drive to LA
yielded 31.5 MPG (will get better I am sure) and the XM and Sat Nav
with voice control performed flawlessly right off the bat.
When you get the Nav you get it all, leather, heated seats, XM, etc. so
    the decision is very easy.
I feel like I am driving a BMW 5 series that has the potential to get
37 mpg. Around town I have been getting a steady 30.
By the by Mark will ship the car to you for free!! Perry Motors Inc
    (760) 872-4141. Warranty is 4 years and 48,000 and the battery are
for 8 years or 80,000, Got the Honda care for an extra 1250.00 which
takes the warranty to 7years or 100,000.

He also sells the Prius and I drove the two back to back. If you are
mainly an around town driver get the Prius, but if you are an
enthusiast and take long trips get the Accord. It really wails!
