Hey guys I am picking up a used 2001 Honda CR-V EX on Thursday. The car only
has 67,000 on it but I want to really inspect the car good before I buy it.
I am not very familiar with Hondas as this will be the first one that I have
purchased. What I really want to know is what should I really be concerned
about checking over before making this deal?? What should I look for and pay
very close attention to BEFORE going thru on purchasing the Honda? There is
no warrenty left on the car and is being sold as is (private owner). I know
you can't predict the future on any used car but what i'm looking for is
maybe some tips on what to check for and what to ask the owner of the car. I
am open to any suggestions. Thanks much guys and gals.

You'll need to take it to a real mechanic to be sure it's OK, and
probably get a Carfax or similar if you're not sure it's never been
    written off etc.

After you own it you HAVE to get the valves set to the loose side of the
specs, and change the 1.2 Q of Dual Pump Fluid in the rear differential.
Every 30,000 miles for both procedures (owner's manual is wrong).

You can use these facts for bargaining, especially if you take the
seller for a 'parking lot test' so it growls / scrapes.

Hi Darby, your pick is a pretty young Honda, years and
miles, so I would not be as concerned about some things, but
    FWIW on "buying used," see

    http://home.earthlink.net/~honda.lioness/id18.html

and the posts by Tegger in particular in the thread
    http://groups.google.com/group/rec.autos.makers.honda/browse_thread/thread/f3d6f04fd0e7dbfc/4c00876aee7f0ecc?lnk=st&q=insubject%3Aused+author%3Aelle&rnum=4#4c00876aee7f0ecc

Hopefully people with specific caveats about younger CR-Vs
will chime in, too. Certain models around this era have had
auto tranny problems, IIRC, for one.

Thank you for the great info and links. I will be sure to read and hopefully
learn more about these great little cars.

There isn't a whole lot to look for, other than what has been said already.
I have a 2001 LX 4WD with 69,000 miles and have had absolutley no troubles.
I've replaced the front brakes at 27,000 and 53,000 miles, the dual pump
fluid and valve adjustment at 35,000 miles, so that's getting done after the
holidays, but have the original rear brakes. Changing out the dual pump
fluid, if it hasn't been done is about $65. A valve adjustment is also in
order if it hasn't been done. Have it checked out by a professional and
hope it all works out. Make sure you get the obligatory 2 keys plus valet
and an owners manual with the radio code card (assuming it has the Honda
    factory stereo).

    ================================

The Gen 1 tranny is bullet-proof. I've had / have 5 of them. Very little
    troubles on the various forums.
