    Hello:

Just bought a new Accord LX (6 Cyl)
It's been a very, very, long time since I last purchased a new car.

Understand that it's perhaps a bit subjective, etc., but would appreciate
any thoughts and opinions, on whether it's a good idea to add on the
    extended Honda warranties, etc on.

They appear to be very pricey.
Seems like this is probably where they really make a killing.

    Anyway, the specific items are:

    a. "Economy" Service Plan. $ 1,400
"Mechanical component coverage beyond the factory warranty, with
    additional benefits.
84 months, or 100,000 miles. No deductable. "

Would certainly hope to keep the car for 100,000 +

(Guess that this also covers transmission, which now would only be
    for 3 yrs/36,000 mi)

    b. Simonize $ 400 (what's the going price elsewhere these days ?)

    c. LoJack $ 700 (what's the going price elsewhere these days ?)

    Much thanks,
    Bob

  2. You don't want to buy ANYTHING that isn't HondaCare, the Honda-brand
    factory extended warranty.

You can buy HondaCare from any dealer; odyclub.com has a warranty
section where they have all the scoop on who has good prices.

You can also buy factory accessories, like your tape deck, from a wide
number of Honda dealers who sell mail order.

I don't know about the Simonize or LoJack although $400 for something you
    could do yourself seems excessive.

The service plans are highly negotiable. I heard of some at $700. I paid
$1,000 for a 2000 Odyssey in 2000. Call around to other dealers.

As to whether it's a good deal. Who knows? I like the peace of mind my
$1,000 bought. But it's really just an extension of the manufacturer's
warranty. My 100,000 miles/seven years warranty is really for an extra
    64,000 miles and four years.

As far as LoJack goes $700USD is pretty good but does depend on what
options you get. The early warning system adds to the cost. I tried to
get LoJack to do it and they wanted about $900 for the complete system
(installed). They recommended that I use the dealer as the rate would be
cheaper and it was. For $700 I got the works installed at my home.
LoJack will not let you put in your own sysem. Not even a Honda dealer
will do it, LoJack technicians will do it at your home or at the
    dealership.

    I second that...you want only HondaCare. $1,400 is a rip-off even for
    HondaCare. Try www.curryhondacare.com ($925 for your coverage) -- it's
true HondaCare from a Honda dealer. Not sure what happened to that site
    though.

If extended warranties float your boat; then by all means buy one.
Tip: Offer them about 25% of the MSRP, negotiate from there.

Snake oil.... Send me the $400, and I'll come to your home and apply
    the Simonize.
Personally I wouldn't waste my money on one. But again, it's comfort
zone, if it makes you feel good; buy it... Just remember the only way someone
is going to steal your car is if they "jack-you" or tow it away. Without the
magic key, the car can't be started.
