I tried searching but found dated material. Here is the question. I am
thinking of buying a new accord and wondering if the 4 cyl. will cool
properly or do you need the 6 cyl for that. I used to have a 4 cyl
Integra that was worthless for cooling the car if the temp was over
    80.

  2. For many, many years, Honda ignored the A/C issue. Their cars couldn't
    cool for anything.

Starting with the 98 Accord, they figured it out. I had a 2000 Accord 4
cylinder, and I have a 2002 Odyssey, and you can hang meat in those cars.

You won't have any problems with the newer Accords with respect to
    sufficient interior cooling.

    I've got a '94 Civic whose A/C isn't quite as efficient as I'd like. I
suppose the best way to find out whether it is operating as efficiently
as it can be is to head for a shop to have the refrigerant level
checked? I've never had an A/C serviced before, and I'm reluctant to
have anyone crack it open in case they then leave a leak... Info
    appreciated.

I am just guessing but I would imagine the smaller the engine the
smaller the compressor it can handle and still accelerate. If it gets
too small it won't do the job at all.

I doubt that the number of engine cylinders has much to do with it, but I
regret I bought a green 2004 4 door LX because the AC is anemic. It was
really poor until I had the dealer monkey with it and now the AC is merely
anemic. If it were white, silver, or gold, it might be somewhat better. (I
intended to buy a white one, but at the last minute decided on green.) My
windows do not have any add-on window tinting and I live in Fort Worth, TX.
However, it has been a remarkably cool summer this year. I'd hate to
imagine one of those 108 degree days we had in 2000.

I'd be surprised if they put a larger compressor on the V6'es. If they do,
go with the V-6, mine is a 4-banger.

I have a white 2004 4 cylinder EX auto, and the a/c is fabulous. I live in
southern Arizona, where it is at least 100 for about 3 months. I doubt your
problem is related to car color, though I understand your point.

Also, the a/c doesn't seem to take power away from the engine. That is, when
the compressor comes on I don't notice a loss of power as I did in my
previous three Hondas -- all Civic 5-speeds.

Integras could cool adequately when properly charged, but weren't
outstanding. That's my experience with my '04 V6 Accord, too. If you
want to blow ice cubes, you probably want another car.

  9. I doubt that engine size has anything to do with it. My folks have a 2004
Toyota Corolla with a 1.8L engine, and its A/C is quite powerful.

My 2002 Accord a/c is lousy as was my 1992 Accord. However, my 2003 CRV has
    a very good a/c. Can't figure why!

Arizona is not a very severe test of a/c performance. Try Texas,
Florida, etc. where the temps are just as high and the humidity is far
higher. A lot of the a/c's work goes to extracting moisture. Even
with the recent proliferation of evaporative a/c units in buildings
raising the relative humidity above historic levels, Arizona's
humidity is still relatively quite low.

My 1988 Accord could cool the car like a meat locker when it worked. It
consistantly had problems retaining coolant. I imagine when later banned
R12 the technology had to cach up. My 2004 4cyl cools quite well. Not as
well as an R12 system, but good for modern coolants.
