No maintenance required?

I remember a few years ago seeing this Honda Accord commercial that showed a
guy welding his hood shut, and the commercial said that he could drive the car
for 10 years without needing to open the hood. Is this true? Can Hondas go
    that long without needing maintenance?

no. it was just a commercial. by "maintenace", they mean a spark plug
change. you still need to open the hood to change the oil.

I thought that was a Toyota Corolla commercial. It was a national TV
    spot, right?

Any car will need oil changes. At the very least, the fluids should
be checked for leaks, even with the longer recommended drain periods.
There are a lot of things that can go wrong.

How can you open the hood if you welded it shut?

I recall the commercial, and I am pretty sure it said 10 years without a
tune-up (not 10 years without maintenance). So, what exactly is a
tune-up? It seems that to car manufacturers, replacing the spark plugs
    is a tune-up.

Tune ups used to include carbureauter (sp) adjustments. But that went away
with computer controlled fuel injection. Now tune ups would include replacing
the electrical system (plugs, wires, distributor cap, etc)

No car can go 10 years without some sort in inspection or filter replacement.

  8. I just did a tune-up on my 2000 Accord SE at 54k mile, even though Honda
says you can wait until 105k. Changed the plugs, cap, rotor, wires, pcv
    and filters (not fuel).

I must say everything looked in great shape, very likely could have gone
    the full 105k miles.

I wonder if Honda could have gotten sued over that commercial. Welding a hood
shut implies that neither maintenance nor tune-up (nor anything else that
requires opening the hood) is necessary.

Not if they put a disclaimer on the commercial.
