Odd idle

Discussion in 'General Motoring' started by Josh Carpenter, Sep 17, 2005.

  1. I have a 1995 Accord and it is behaving funny when it idles. It will rev up
to 1500 rpm and then abruptly drop to 1000. This does not happen all of the
time, but most of the time when I am at stoplights and such. The car also
shudders during the 500 rpm drop. Has anyone ever had this happen, or know
how to fix it or at least what might be causing it?

I had a similar problem with my 1991 Civic. I purged the cooling system of
air (having recently done some work on it), and this fixed the problem.

Some engine controls are cooled by the radiator cooling system. In
particular, my EAC valve had a big air bubble in it.

It may take 30-50 minutes for the fan to come on twice during the air purge.

If this does not fix it, report back.

    1) Low coolant level in block
    2) Air leak into intake

Air thing into intake system is controlled by computer system in fuel
    injection.
Therefore, the problem could be on faulty computer system. If the
    problem is
on faulty computer system, we can't fix this one. The manual says take
    to
    the dealer or specialized mechanic.

The "computer system" consists of about a thousand sensors and controls.
Most problems are disagnosable by owners (and us) given enough
    investigation and smarts.

If we simply took the car to the dealer whnever something went wrong with
the "computer system", then we might as well shut down this group. Taking
it to a garage is a last resort when all else fails.

And with that attitude, why are you even here?
