Odyssey transmission troubles?

Discussion in 'Odyssey' started by Glenn Holliday, Mar 5, 2005.

  1. One day last week my 2002 Odyssey suddenly refused to shift up
from 2nd into 3rd. I was in slow moving city traffic at the
time. I pulled off, turned the car off, restarted, and all was
    well after.

The car was checked for the trans heating recall two months
ago. The dealer at that time said there was no problem with
my trans, and made no changes then.

A Honda dealer service desk and two independent trans shops all
told me they've never heard of this. None of them can do any
diagnostic unless it turns on the check engine light or the
problem becomes repeatable. I also can't find any mention of
    this symptom on the Internet.

Is there any history or knowledge about this problem?
Is the correct remedy don't worry, be happy till it
    happens again?

    Thanks for any info.

I guarantee there's history and knowledge of this problem. People at
odyclub.com have even used what's posted on odyclub.com to make Honda
pony up for a new transmission.

This is the age of the net. They can't hide behind the "we've never
    heard of it before" defense.

if you can't duplicate the symptom, the dealer won't waste their
time. they don't give a crap about odyclub.com. you either have a
    problem or you don't

People on odyclub report using the reports on odyclub.com to force
Honda's hand. Honda does its best to claim that they've never heard of
something, but having proof that someone else's transmission was
replaced by Honda for the exact same issue is pretty damn strong.

They can't hide behind the "we've never heard of it before" defense when
there's hard proof that Honda has indeed heard of it before, to the
point where Honda replaced the transmission for free.

How to kill a Honda Accord/Ody tranny in 30 secoonds or less........

Step on brakes HARD, step on GAS hard. In 30 seconds or less you'll kill the
tranny. Honda covers under SILENT extended warranty because the trannys are
    JUNK!!!!!!

Last time I heard there was a 3-4 week waiting list of people waiting to get
rebuilt trannys from Honda, they are backlogged that bad!

"Silent Recalls" gotta love the idea :)

granted honda trannys are getting a bad reputation, but tranny
replacement only accounts for about 3% of warranty claims.
as for 3-4 week waiting list... did you pull that number out of yor
ass????? Whenever i order a tranny, it gets there within 3 days.
    always has.
silent warranty? there's an open campaign on them 7years or
100,000 miles, published in the papers, not so silent.

  7. I think he's referring to the fact that Honda has always had quiet
campaigns where they take care of people who appear to fall outside of
    the published recalls.

Go back and look to see if there was any official recall for the 79
Civic for either its front beam or its gas tank. You won't find
it--because they never did recall those. However, if someone came in
with a problem, Honda quietly took care of it.

Now, myself, I don't mind Honda's quiet methods. I'm the type who will
ask for Honda to take care of things, and if there's an "unofficial,
    quiet" campaign, Honda will.

However, the people who get all bent out of shape about something like
that are the people who expect that they should never have to ask, that
they should be spoon-fed everything they want if it's available in any
capacity whatsoever. These people expect the service writer or service
manager to offer to handle everything without ever being asked.

In other words, these people want the moon.

I say, go ask for what you want. The world is not here to serve any of
us. At least ASK for Honda to take care of an obvious problem.

So with respect to transmissions, are there situations where Honda is
replacing transmissions for issues that appear to be outside the recall?
Undoubtedly. Are they advertising that fact? Undoubtedly not.

just curious what FWD tranny *would* be able to deal with abuse like that?

Local dealership ran out of "loaners" to cover the Accords/Odys that were
sitting awaiting rebuilt trannys to come in from Honda.

The techs get 6-7 hours time to do swap in the rebuilt trannys, usually can
get it done in 3.5-4 hours. That includes replacing the ECU in the Accords
which detunes the engines power output so the rebuilt trannys will last
    longer.

hoda pays for a rental car on the warranty if the car stays.
the odessy has an updated ECU, but haven't seen on e for an
    accord.
flate rate time is 5-6 hours, and after doing many of them
yes i can get it done in just under 2.
honda has 3 companies i believe doing rebuild now.
the bought up cores from bone yards everywhere. if they don't have
reman, i've gotten several brand new ones.
all internal components are replaced and each one is dyno
    tested now.

  11. Yeah, but are they just putting the same bad designs back into the cars,
or have they fixed the design?

  12. Thanks for the advice.
    I assume you're thinking of a different model/year? I looked
again at my warranty book on the '02 Odyssey, and it says
36,000 miles. Did I miss out on something? (I just clicked over
100,000 miles since my original post.)

Its not in the warranty book. You should have gotten a letter from Honda.

  14. Nope, we got 2 recall notices on this vehicle, but nothing about
    extending the warranty.

  15. Yesterday this happened again. I found that if I backed off and
accelerated extremely gently, the trans then shifted normally.
This car has not been subjected to fierce acceleration.
It's now at 100,700 miles, none of them abusive, and the
transmission has not exhibited a problem until the past 3 weeks.
Still no check engine light, so Honda says they can't do anything
    about it.

I'm grateful for the replies to this thread. It sounds like
others have other troubles with this transmission, but this particular
    symptom is not well-known.

I'm going to have to decide if it's safe to take my family far
from home in this car for Easter. I'll let you know if I learn
    more facts about this problem.

  16. Is your automatic a 4-speed or 5-speed? IIRC, the extended warranty
applies to the 4-speed, while recalls were issued for the 5-speed.

If you are in the US, you can register on the owner's link on the Honda
webpage and it will list all the recalls and warranty extensions that
specifically apply to your vehicle. Since you've already gone over 100,000
miles though, its probably moot unless you can find a kind hearted dealer.
