All 4 spark plugs have oil on them.

Am I in for a large bill?

What are the likely reasons and is it a job an intermediate level
    DIY'er.(fairly ancient) could tackle?

Burned on oil, or the kind you find at the end of the dip stick? bob

It's quite fluid and "oily". Plug threads have burned oil marks a 1/4
    way up thread.

    sid,

Easy to fix... there are rubber seals half-way down, inside the plug
'tubes', where the valve cover meets the engine block. When you buy a
complete kit for the valve cover, you get these seals, along with the
main gasket, and the gromets for the 10mm(?) nuts that hold the cover
down. Not surprising for these to leak on an older model.

Good time to check the valve adjustment? (a fun, worthwhile project for
    the DIY guy) :)

    Thanks Curly.
Very helpful. I just hope it's as easy as you say.
Is there a web site with "Workshop Manual" details for this job ?
