But most people don't know that, or won't take a chance.

I have a Boxer. He sounds real tough when someone knocks on the door,
and goes nuts when they ring the doorbell. But let someone in, and
it's, "Give me a biscuit, and I'll show you the safe."

That said, those who don't know him are very intimidated on the other
side of the door. Power perceived is power achieved.

  2. Had it not been for my aversion to sticking ANYTHING on my Corvette, I
always kinda wanted that bumper sticker "The keys to my car are on the
front seat, next to my Rottweiler"

My Rotties always were partial to riding in the car. Last one I had
could get into the back seat of the LeBaron convertible without opening
the door or touching the side. One leap and he was there. Leave him
out in the parking lot sitting in it with the top down. He'd smile at
folks and they wouldn't come near or even park by my car.<g>

He was a lover, not a fighter, but at 110 lbs nobody knew for sure.

    Or wants to.

We used to own three Mastiffs. The male topped 217 pounds.

They were as gentle as kittens, but were given a wide berth when we
    walked them.

Many dogs were "gentle as kittens",up to the day they attacked small
children or adults and killed them. Even family members.
There's no telling what will set off a dog.
It could be a innocent movement,a smell you have on you,a noise you make.

Well, they're neat looking and all, but take all of about 30 seconds to
    defeat.

If someone knows what they are doing, and really wants your car, they
will have it. It might make more sense to leave the doors unlocked and
the keys in the ignition. That way, the kids joyriding won't bust a
window and your steering column to go for a ride, and they might even
think enough of you to not torch the car when they are done...

If you do shoot them, though, make sure they are dead. The
investigation goes much quicker when there is only one side to the
story. And having a decent sized folding knife to put in their hands
once they are down couldn't hurt, either...

Even the new Hondas can be stolen, by a pro, without much problem. But
it does take a little longer now, and the kiddies can't do it...

That's just plain bullshit. Not only have I been around dogs in the
family my whole life, but also volunteered at a local SPCA. In the two
years there, along with the rest of my life, I have never come across a
dog that was "gentle as a kitten" until they "snapped". Attacks come
from one of two conditions: Either a provoked animal (even the tamest
dog will revert to self defense when threatened enough) or an abused
animal (think pit bulls, trained for fighting, or a Golden that is
    beaten daily).

Owner negligence is often the root cause. If a dog hops a fence and
bites a kid, the owner is negligent. The fence was insufficient to keep
    the animal in.

Even the "fighting breeds" are quite capable of being very tame, lovable
animals. Some of the nicest dogs I have been around were Pits and
Rotts. They were from clean stock (not bred from attack or fighting
parents) and brought up in loving homes.

Dogs generally look at people as higher than them in the social order,
and make every effort to please.

Cats, on the other hand, do not like you, and are waiting for you to die
so they can eat your eyeballs... ;-)

An engine disabler is what you need.
    Alarms just disturb others.

You could install an engine enabler. Insert a normally
open pushbutton switch in the line from the ignition
switch to the starter solenoid. Mount the new switch
in some inconspicuous place such as under the dash.

You will have to press the pushbutton while turning the
key to the start position to start the car. Unless a
car thief knows about the pushbutton, he can't start
the car by breaking the key lock. He can't even start
the car if you leave the keys in the ignition.

    Good luck.

  10. They didn't try to steal the car, they took my XM receiver.

I want something that makes noise, but doesn't trigger falsely.

So I can run out with my baseball bat...

If these guys have guns, they're even dumber than I thought...

  14. Considering the low incidence of Mensa members, National Merit Scholars,
and successful, moderately bright folks who earn enough money to buy
what they desire rather than steal it from parked cars, I would hold
that thought if I were you!<g>

  15. If they have guns for petty larceny, they're toast. We have tough gun laws
here, and they'll go up a long time.

Hope the few hundred dollars they boost is worth the time. They've already
busted into the next door neighbor of a State Cop...he only parks his
cruiser outside his house 3-4 times a week...

Hmmm....what were you saying about a dearth of Mensa members...? ;)

    Say What? Guest

I don't know where "here" is for you but we have rather stringent gun
laws in Illinois (even outside Chicago) and they are still dumb.
Had one moron break into a house about 3 miles from me out in the
country. Car sitting on the driveway and he still broke in during broad
daylight. Fought with the owner who, for some reason, didn't shoot him.
Oh, did I mention the car in the driveway was a fully marked sheriff's
    department patrol car?

You have to remove YOUR mindset when you think about what the criminal
class will do. They don't think like you and me. If they did, they
most likely would not be criminals.

Who kills somebody for a dirty look? for a pair of new Nike's? for...?

    See my point?

there might even be more than one auto burglar, and it's not hard to take
    away a baseball bat.
Get a baby monitor, the digital ones have the best range.
Then you can listen in on your car, effectively a silent alarm.
If they break a window or open the door, you will hear it,and they will have
no indication of an alarm.(they are not "cheap",though)

Make an adapter to allow it to run off the 12V auto cig lighter.

Orlando police have had several of their vehicles broken into;the thieves
are targeting them for the guns inside.
Orlando Sheriffs lost 2 machine guns(one a silenced machine pistol!) and a
Glock from just one unmarked car, other thefts nicked a couple of AR-15
rifles and a couple of handguns.
and that's with gun locking stations bolted inside.

Thievery is getting really bad;now the thieves are stealing copper wire
from street lighting *that is powered up*.
also, the copper and aluminum from home air conditioners, and stripping homes
    under construction.

Of course, our laws protect the criminals better than they protect the
ordinary decent citizens(ODCs).They make it SAFE for thieves to steal.

  19. Install a "trip" wire and run it up to your bedroom and tie the other
end to your big toe. Keep the Glock handy, it will be a lot more
effective than a crappy ol' bat...
