Just discovered my wife's car has a crack running from the passenger side
top edge, to what looks like a rock impact point.. then from there it's
making a run for the passenger side edge of the windshield...

go figure that the car that has the crack is the one with only liability
insurance on it (it's '91 with almost 165k miles on it.. and a second car..
if it goes, it goes.. we'll move on)

i've seen the DIY repair kits for these things.. any opinions on which are
the best? and where to find them?

  2. Just pay $300 and get a new windshield, cheapskate!

How to turn off 'Maintenance Required" light:

    1. Hold trip/reset button on dash
    2. Turn key to "ON" or start engine
    3. Hold button til light goes out

Windshields are actually structural. Be safe and get it replaced

  6. If you feel you can replace it with something similar for that price without
    a cracked windshield, do it.

$450? Even a '90 Accord with 200K miles sells for $2500 here. But one with a
cracked windshield probably won't fetch over $1000.

Ok, I stand corrected my car would (according to edmunds.com) go for $957
    through a private party transaction..

KBB.com places it at $2085... Not bad considering I paid $3000 for it 3
years ago... I guess. Alls I know is it gets my wife from home to work
which is something like 2 miles.

Also, the DIY kits (to repair) are not recommended for such a long running
crack. I have replaced windshields in older cars myself... but these newer
ones where there are glued in... that seems a bit more touchy. I wouldn't
want it to come flying out or something!

And one with a cracked windshield won't pass inspection here (NJ).

I had a '90 Prelude once with a crack going from the passenger side lower
corner across and up to the center.. then across and back down near the
driver-side lower corner.. It (obviously) didn't pass inspection.. I
think the specific reason was because the crack went completely across..
either that or it was in the driver's field of vision.. I wound up
getting it replaced through insurance.. (I live in Louisiana, btw)

    ... I miss that car.. (http://tinyurl.com/3hau6)

That is really bad on your engine. She should walk or bike, which
would mean she wouldn't have to exercise as much other times. What she
is doing is creating a lot of water via combustion, but not warming up
the engine enough to drive out that water via vaporization (boiling).

Well she does go other places as well.. She also works where I work which
is about 10 miles away.. Whenever my car isn't available she uses hers.

  14. I may be wrong but I don't think there are any DIY repair kits for cracks
of any length. The DIYers are limited to "bullseye" impacts with minor
starring AFAIK and I'm not sure how well they work. See if there are any
franchises locally which do crack repair and let them have a look at it to
    see if it's doable.
