My Honda Civic Dx is making strange sounds fairly regularly when I press
the brakes and also a few times when accelerating.

I suspect there is something wrong with the power assistance braking at the
    front.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks

We don't know what year your Civic is, but if it has ABS, your fine
owner's manual will explain that noise to you. If it sounds like a can
opener running under the hood for about three seconds at a time, that's
    probably what you're hearing.
Your manual also says how often you should be flushing your brake
system. If you fail to do this your ABS system could be damaged. Call
your dealer and ask how much an ABS modulator is worth.

Your dash lights should be indicating any ABS problems, but you have to
test the bulbs from time to time. The procedure is you-know-where.

Its a 1990 model. No ABS at all.
    Disc brakes in front.

Then what you are hearing is probably the wear bar scraping against the
rotor telling you that your pads are just about gone. Pull off one of the
front wheels and take a look at the pad thickness.
