p.c.v. valve

    reading the group archives, i see that changing the p.c.v. valve is
    commonly recommended for hondas. well, i recently did this on my civic
    because it had a "flat spot" on acceleration and i'd fixed everything
    else that was possible. what an incredible difference!

    /much/ more power
    /much/ smoother automatic shifting
    no more flat spot

    thanks for the information everyone. it may also be worth noting that
    the valve that came off was relatively new, but a generic aftermarket
    version. the one i fitted was genuine honda.

    Yea I had honda replace mine at 40,000 miles after sluggish performance
    etc. They strongly advised not to replace it as they hardly ever replace
    them.

    So when they pulled mine they were shocked to see it stuck (no rattle)

    I need to get done again, its been 30,000 miles. I would do it my self but
    Im having a hard time locating it on my 1999 Civic. Supposidly on the back
    of the block somewere?

    Go to http://www.hondaautomotiveparts.com/auto/jsp/mws/catdisplay.jsp
    Put in your car's info. Select "Breather Chamber." A drawing of the PCV valve
    and a few nearby components will come up. It may be helpful to locating the
    valve.

    interesting you say that. this car had been "independently" maintained
    for a number of years by a ford garage and i guess they replaced it from
    habit. the 89 i had previously had 180k on it and the pcv had never
    been replaced from what i could see. it performed flawlessly, so i
    assumed it was a "no trouble" item. the non-honda valve was clearly a
    piece of junk and those things /definitely/ need to be replaced regularly.

  5. Mine Accord with 116k still rattles but I do clean it out with brake cleaner
    on occasion. I don't really see the need to replace it if it is rattling.

  8. Rattling is not the only criteria for a pcv valve. The spring pressure
    is important. With 160k miles, the spring is likely worn out and not at
    the same force it was when new. Spring:)-) ) for a new pcv, they are not
    that expensive.
