Prevent programs from running in the task bar.

Discussion in 'General Motoring' started by Tibur Waltson, Dec 27, 2003.

  1. When programs runs on the taskbar without us knowing why it can take up
memory and slow a computer down. I go to settings and and select advance,
startup and delete them but they continue to come back. Two of these
notorious programs are WinAmp and Real Player. I hardly even use them. How
do I keep them out of the taskbar.

    TIA

  2. Not sure why you posted this on the Honda newsgroup, but..

Winamp should be pretty well-behaved. If you right click on the icon in the
tray, it should let you "disable Winamp agent at startup" or something like
    that.

Realplayer sucks, and will put itself back in your startup every time you
use it. Try this: Start -> Run -> regedit. Then, hkey_local_machine ->
software -> microsoft -> windows -> currentversion -> run. Delete the keys
in here for anything you don't want starting up.

  3. Taskbar?

Do you mean the Dock? I have a bunch of login items selected, and they
do show up in the Dock, but they don't slow anything down at all.

You can do an archive & install and get back to square 1, and see if
    that solves your problem.

In addition to the above, delete the items of question in your
    "StartUp" folder.

Quicktime, Real Player, and a few others like to put themselves in the
registry run section whether you want them to or not.

Now, back to regularly scheduled Honda Discussions.

  6. What great practical advices everyone! I meant to post to
alt.os.windows.2000 but it just came here instead. What a shock on my part.
But with many intelligent help here, I'd deleted RealPlayer at several
    places
mentioned, especially the registry. They won't be docking here anymore.
    Thanks.
