Can anyone tell me, is there a specific name for the purple lights where
windshield-wiper waters squirts out? I've seen these on several Civics
at night. They seem rather "cool", as the young ones say. I am thinking
perhaps I will purchase a few.

They're called "dorkage", although that also includes black headlight
covers, wheels 3 times wider than tall, trunklid spoilers on FWD cars,
    etc.

  4. Their specific name is "illegal". Amber only in front, amber and red only
    in the rear. Enforcement varies.

Crutchfield refers to them as washer lights. See

You can probably find them at your local Pep Boys / Autozone or even
Target / K-mart / Wall Mart. They should be right next to the fuzzy
    dice...

Excellent: I will approach some of the young men who stand
on the street-corners with their Hondas and ask about their "dorkage".

I'm not sure if this response was a joke.. But that scene looks really
    funny in my head.

They are illegal in California, and quite the law enforcement magnet.

Spoilers do serve a purpose on FWD cars... they reduce lift at high speeds.
Spoilers are not just for downforce, which is a reason for them on RWD cars.
However, your point is well taken, as most spoilers I see on Hondas are
ridiculously HUGE and pointless (I doubt most of the cars with them will
approach 100mph, where a spoiler just begins to serve its purpose).

I presume the spoiler on my Honda Civic Hybrid was added for something
other than dorkage or downforce. I suspect it has to do with aerodynamics
and a meager improvement in gas mileage.

I am new immigrant and am very thankful for the kind advice and warm
reception given in this newsgroup. I hope I can learn from the young
men about their "dorkage", they seem so friendly and I enjoy using new
    English terms.

  12. Well these purple lights are also called illegal since any forward facing
lights of vehicles registered to normal civilians are only allowed to
produce a white, or yellow-amber-orange color during operation.

Although I have had my share of fun with my wig-wags long ago I call the
state patrol everytime I see those lights and the penalties are not cheap if
they think you are trying to impersonate an officer of the law like the punk
that flashed his stupid little lights at me.

It's supposed to "look cool." It serves no other function.

To me, they look as cool as a burned out tail light.

Funny, you don't seem to have a lack of knowledge of "English terms" in
    *other* newsgroups..

  18. They serve exactly the same function/purpose as on any other street-legal
car - to dress the car up so it resembles the racing/rally version of the
same car. FWD or RWD has nothing to do with it.

When you approach these young men, be careful to filter out the "dude" and
"yo" sounds that you hear, as they are not used for information transfer in
conversations. They are just filler to compensate for lack of vocabulary.

Also, when you attempt to speak to the young man, do not use the bill of
his ballcap as an indicator for which is the front of him. Often ballcaps
on young men are oriented in non-standard ways and can cause confusion
among adults. Attempt to determine where the "dude" and "yo" sounds are
coming from. That is the front. You will have greatest success when
directing your queries in that direction.
