I see many newer cars on the street with "hazy" looking spots arranged
in some checker-like pattern on a rear window. What causes them to
    form?

Take off your polarizing sunglasses, and the pattern will go away. It is
an artifact of the tempering process used on the rear windows.

  3. Side windows, too. I thought it was a result of the summer sun because
that's when it appears, but that's also when I'm wearing sunglasses.
    Thanks for the info.
