I know that using non-Honda ATF can cause poor performance while it is
present, but can it actually cause lasting damage to the transmission?

Very definately. That's why the Owner's Manual says Dexron III can be
used ONLY as a 'temporary substitute'. It lacks some of the special
friction modifiers that a Honda needs to keep it running correctly.
Honda ttrannies are very diferent inside than many 'normal' designs.
