Quick poll, Would your next car be a honda?

Discussion in 'General Motoring' started by stylesandsmiles, Nov 11, 2004.

  1. I am just curious if you people out there that have a honda, would consider
buying your next car in the future. If so, would you consider, standard or
    auto, and civic, or accord?
For those of you whom would. Did you buy your's new or used?

Bought my 97 Accord Wagon at 86000 miles in 2003.
Plan to run it until at least 200k which will be about 2008.
Will almost certainly buy another Honda after that - by then
the current Accord Wagons should be cheap enough, or I
    might buy an Odyssey.

Whenever I buy a car I look to see what's available at a comparable price.
I bought an Accord 2.0 iVTEC SE manual from a UK main dealer as a nearly new
    demonstrator.
It's good but now I've lived with it for a while, I think it was an
    expensive purchase.
The new Accord has some very good competition here in the UK.
If I do go for a similar Honda next time, I'll look around for a better
    price.

  5. purchased an '04 Ody back in May. almost purchased a S2000 at the same
time. then I got thinking. I could also afford a used NSX for the same
money as a new S2000. that decision is still up in the air.

1991 Civic owner here. I think my next car will be a Toyota Echo 2010.

The Echo has a low initial cost, high miles/gallon and few frills. It should
have the Toyota/Honda longevity, so I expect it will be easy to work on for
years (as I head into truly old age).

If it's not the Echo, it will be another Civic. The latest Civic's engines are a
little larger displacement-wise, but because of VTEC IIRC they're getting
mileage as good as the Echos.

My current Civic, an LX, has a high end upholstery, and Toyota may not make
Echoes with such nice interiors. This I will miss (and it's something I will
splurge a little on, if available). People today still comment on my 91 Civic's
    upholstery.

It will be a manual transmission.

I bought my car new. The next time will probably be new, too. I like knowing
exactly what's been done to the car. Cost estimates indicate buying new and
driving into the ground is about as cost effective as buying used and driving
    into the ground.

Bought my first Honda used a few months ago, '94 Civic EX, manual
tranny. Am glad I got the EX because of its more powerful engine (can't
imagine driving a CX Hatch with only a 70 hp engine). Love it so far.
Don't know whether I'd ever buy a car new. Had an auto V8 previously,
350 engine, and that was a lot more powerful. I've heard the Civic auto
trannies of that vintage ain't so hot, and having driven a friend's I'm
    inclined to agree.

Accord would be nice b/c of the bigger engine/better pickup, but I'm so
enjoying going from 16 mpg with the V8 (hwy) to 32 in the Civic that I'm
not about to decrease the mileage with the current gas prices. Perhaps
when money becomes no object and we haven't yet run out of fossil
    fuels... ;-)

  9. I am leaning that direction too. but damn, a 10 year old car or $30+.
That's quite a jump for a dumb okie.

  10. I have a '93 Accord which I bought used almost 5 years ago. It now has
217,000km (about 135,000 miles) on it and it still runs like new. I have
been very happy with this car, and I expect it to last for at least 6-8
more years. When the time comes to replace it, my next car will
definitely be a Honda. Which model, I don't know yet. But my first
choice would be an Accord Coupe.

My mom bought the first Honda in the family in 1981 with a brand new Accord.
Based on her positive experience I bought my first Honda hatch back in 1985 and
drove it for 90+ K miles without a single problem. When the addition of a baby
in 1991 required a 4 door car there really wasn't any choice but another Honda
Accord. That car is now 13 years old and with the exception of some rust on the
rear quarter panel it is going strong.

Can't say what the next car will be because the current Honda still has a couple
of years to go before the rust kills it. But I will certainly consider another
    Honda when the time comes.

    Dean
BTW Mom traded her Accord for a Chrysler mini van that was the car from #&$^!
She got rid of that disaster and bought, you guessed it, a Honda Odyssey.

Bought a new Accord EX V6 in 2000. Was very unimpressed with the overall
fit and finish. A lot of manufacturing defects/glitches as well, which the
dealer had difficulty correcting. It was also automatic, which I got bored
of very quickly. Sold it after a year. I'm not thinking of buying another
    Honda any time soon.

    Cheers,

id be paranoid driving an "exotic" like the NSX. the insurance on one is
probably pretty crazy, with all the aluminum body panels, etc.

Yes, someone else here said this about a year ago, and I don't reject this as a
second or third possible choice. They're both 1.5 Liter engines (possibly
exactly identical; you know better), but for a 5-speed manual:

    Echo
    35/43 mpg
    1.5 L
    $11k - $12k MSRP

    Scion
    32/38 mpg
    1.5 L
    $13k-$14k
2 cubic foot less luggage space
notably boxier in appearance--I think wind resistance and won't get past this
    waste ;-)

    Honda Civic
    32/38 mpg
    1.7 L
    $13-$21k
4 cubic feet less luggage space; but 5 cubic feet more pass space

miles per gallon 2004 from www.fueleconomy.gov . Prices 2005 from
    www.edmunds.com

I don't think the plusher interior I expect from a Scion (and costing $2000
more) is going to outweigh the roughly 10% worse fuel mileage I'd get from it.

At any rate, the 91 Civic 159k miles is running so well; is sharper (sleeker,
    mostly) in appearance (even with my Red Hand & Rustoleum paint rust repairs);
and I now feel like I have a really good handle on diagnosing any future
problems (thanks to the newsgroup, its archives and various other online
resources), that a new car purchase is pretty far away.

But I dunno. I might compromise to something like a low-key but fun and high mpg
motorcycle for three-season local driving and a scion for winter and traveling.
Or get the motorcycle sooner rather than later and make the Civic last longer
    than five years.

I agree with the Echo. My wife has a 2001 Honda Accord and I find it to be
an ergonomic nightmare. I recently purchased a 2003 Echo Coupe for myself
and other than the fact it is ugly, it is a great car.

same engine, same platform, same rear beam axle.
the xB, yeah. its a box. the xA? like a baby toyota matrix... thats the
    one id get.
the scion also comes with power windows, locks, 4 doors, 15" wheels, AC,
and a kickass pioneer mp3/CD player, standard. so theres your $2k right
there. plus, the xA looks like a 7/8ths scale matrix, which i also like.
ive got one of these as a commuter/grocery getter...

    http://www.suzuki-bikes.com/burgman400.php

so unless im going on a longer trip, or getting a LOT of groceries, the
civic stays in the garage. mebbe thats why my 98 CX only has 47k miles
    on it :)

These I have on my 91 Civic and want again, true, but in five years. :)
I believe 4-doors is the norm on the Echo.

I think I heard from a car dealer once that 2-door sedans are something like 5%
    of all sedans.
I don't want any of this stuff. I'm really non-materialistic, uncomplicated,
find pleasure in other things. I still like listening to the radio when I drive.
It's about the only time I do.
Yes, I really have to consider this approach very closely.

385 cc sounds good. What do you get for miles per gallon?

Will it do 50 mph comfortably?

And am I understanding correctly that it's an automatic transmission? Say it
    ain't so.

And, um, I think I'd like something a little less cute looking... I don't drive
fast but I still want to look good.

Or is this one low to the ground for middle-aged folks who want less accident
    risk and more riding comfort?
