    Dear Gordon,

    The whole idea of public school is that I shouldn't have to buy property in
    New Trier to get a good education for my kids.

    And throwing money at the teachers doesn't necessarily help the problem.
    We've been throwing money at the problem since the mid-60's. And the NEA
    and school districts have been begging for millage increases since then.
    So they can become indoctrinated Democrat clones. Hillary tried pulling
    this in 1990 in Arkansas.

  2. OK, please do.
    I have found that when other people want you to look up facts to
    support their positions, you usually find what their positions were
    based on, which is nothing.

    The product liability crises is manufactured by corporations who want
    to be held even less accountable for their actions. The cost of PL
    litigation in the US is dwarfed by the cost of companies suing each
    other for various reasons.
    Try us.

    I think you had some problems with your math.

    GM = 26.8 %

    Ford = 17.9 %

    Chrysler= 14 %

    Toyota = 13.7 %

    Honda = 8.9 %

    You stated above " Toyota and Honda a distant fourth and fifth. " Honda
    may be a distant fifth but Toyota is almost even with Chrysler, unless you
    consider 3 tenths of one percent * distant*.

  4. But as long as the budgets are paid from property taxes, places with
    expensive real estate will have more money for the schools.
    I don't think that outside the New Trier district and similar locales,
    the wages for teachers are very high. Even at New Trier, they get the
    cream of the crop with PhDs in education for 90 or 100K. That is
    hardly out of line with what a comparable worker would make in private
    industry.

    The fun part is when someone tries to put a cap on local property
    taxes in these places. All of these tax-cut conservatives start
    screaming about how unwise it would be to cut their taxes. Maybe they
    know that you do get more when you pay more and they don't skimp on
    their children's education.

    I asked who caused the expensive contracts -- not why is healthcare
    so expensive. Everyone is paying more for healthcare. Not everyone
    was so stupid as to allow or force such expensive contracts.

    As much money as we're throwing at it in some districts, we could hire a
    tutor for each kid. And we've raised that amount quite a bit since 1965.
    So what have we really gained? And why do so many public figures send their
    kids to private schools? And why has home schooling got so big?

  7. GM *IS* making the best cars that they can. They simply *are not* good enough.

    As one who has been fiddling with cars since the mid 1950's, the current
    GM is but a shadow of its former self. Since the late 1960's, their
    products left much to be desired such as the Chevette, Vega, and most
    recently the Avalanche and that ugly Pontiac truck thang along with the
    notorious swapping of engines between divisions etc. As stupid as the
    American public can be, public reaction as been anti GM in ever
    increasing numbers.

    GM made its bed and now is finding out that it ain't all that comfy...

    Your polution equipment guess is simply wrong. Honda builds Accords in
    both Japan and Ohio and varies the mix for any number of reasons. I
    also live in California, and my '03 Accord was built in Ohio. At the
    time when I bought mine, all of the 4 cylinder Accords at local dealers
    were from Japan and all of the V-6s were from Ohio.

    There are any number of reasons why a company allocates builds to
    various factories.

    Consider that for years at Fremont, CA, GM and Toyota made cars side by
    side. GM seems to have learned nothing from the experience. I'm driving a
    93 Corolla that came off that line. I don't see very many Geo Prisms (The
    equivalent that year, was the Chevy Nova prior to that) of that vintage on
    the road, but I do see a lot of AE10x Corollas (93-95) on the road.

    I asked why there were JT Corollas as well as 1N Corollas in a given year,
    and was told they couldn't make enough 1N Corollas at the plant that year.
    Now they are also importing 2x Corollas (Canadian) in this part of the
    country.

    It would be beneath me to do manual work, sorry; I think you are
    talking from experience but I have no basis to understand what you
    mention. When GM was number one I believe that there was no real
    competition. When the Japanese started competing on quality (i.e.
    engineering metrics) they kicked your butts.

    Apparently you do not know how SS is funded or where the funds are
    'invested,' if that is what you believe.

    I guess that explains why GM, Ford and Chrysler still outsell Toyota and
    every other import.

    Actually the Aveo is built by Suzuki in a Korean plant formally owned by
    Daewoo. Why is it OK to buy a foreign car from a foreign company but not OK
    to buy a foreign can from an American company? At least the American
    company pay federal corporate income taxes on the profit earned ;)

    Did they tell you it is cheaper to make 2N Corollas than it is to make 1N
    Corollas in the GM/ Toyota plant in California, yet sell them for the same
    price?

    Beats me, you would have to ask Toyota if the would like to sell 160,000
    more vehicles to 'catch up' to Chrysler. ;)

    The US market in 2005 was 16,500,000 and Chrysler had 2% more of the market
    than Toyota according to the Commerce Department figures.

    Perhaps you are wasting you time hanging out in the NGs, you should by
    buying lottery tickets and stocks or better yet get into the commodities
    market with all of your insight. LOL
