    Hello,
My compressor in my 93 Accord EX has just kicked the bucket and when I
took it into the shop they quoted me some unbelievable price for a new
compressor ($795) + about another $300-350 for labor. I have checked
online and seen rebuilt compressors for as low as $150. My problem is
that no shop I have called is willing to install parts that I provide.
Does anyone know of a shop in the Fairfax County, VA (Northern ,
VA)area that has a mechanic that will install rebuilt (read not marked
up) parts ? I have previously been taking this car to the dealer for
any other than routine maintenance. Thanks.

Was that for the compressor, or for all of the parts needed?
In order to get a warranty on a new compressor, I would have been required
to replace a bunch of other stuff. If I would forgo the warranty, I could
just replace the compressor for $250, which is what I chose to do.

The "other stuff" was supposedly due to the potential for contamination,
like bearing shards, et al, that would damage the new compressor as they
were carried around in the refrigerant.

nobody wants to be held responsible for your parts. i understand
that. try an a/c shop. I wouldn't touch it. as soon as it craps they
    always blame the installer.

Well thanks to everyone for the input. This was resolved in an
interesting way. After 2 shops had told me that I needed a new
compressor and a third said that they would only fix it if I agreed to
have the ac system retrofited to the newer non-freon system I finally
got tired of the bullshit and took it to a previous good shop that I
had stopped going to because it is too far away from where I live now.
I took the day off and visited friends while I waited. Well the
verdict ? I had a small leak and although they were not able to
pinpoint it with the dye test, they charged me $200 for the refill and
labor with a warranty to refill it for just labor if it leaks out in
the near future. I initially felt like an idiot because it turned out
to be no big deal . I am now cooling out here in hot Nothern VA. It
just goes to show you how bad some shops can be.
