remote only works sometimes

I have a '97 Accord with a factory remote for keyless entry.
Frequently, I'll be standing right next to the car, but it will take
10 or 20 key presses to unlock the car. What's most interesting is
that after one press that open the driver-side door, the second press
will always open the other three doors. It never takes another 10 or
20 key presses.

I've tried new batteries. Didn't help.

Any ideas?

Does it ever work perfectly, even ten / twenty feet from the car?

Sounds like the antenna on the receiver is touching ground or tucked up
against metal.

What happens if you use the other transmitter?

It never works perfectly, but if it were a problem with the antenna,
why would the second press always work perfectly after the first one?
