    Hello,

I am looking for recommendations - I'd like to add a remote starter to my
'06 Civic LX. My dealer won't help me - says it would void the warranty...

There are several advertised - just looking for anyone with experience to
let me know what they think.

    Thanks!

  2. I don't see how a remote starter that is properly installed would void
the warranty. I also don't see a need for such a device either.

The dealer is lying through his teeth. Unless a modification can be linked
the failure of a particular system or subsystem on the vehicle, it will NOT
void the warranty. If he rejects warranty work based on such a minor
modification, go directly to the district manager of the car manufacturer,
get the warranty work done. The dealer will get demerits on his customer
    service report.

Personally I don't want a remote starter, but to each his own.

remote starter is not a good idea. you do not need to "warm up the
engine" - it's very bad for it in fact. just get in and drive away.

Isn't remote start all about cold climates? I left the land of ice and
snow years ago but what I remember is that start and go was did not work
    in January. It's more like:

    1) Get in car. D*mn! it's cold.
    2) Start car and defroster.
    3) Go outside and scrape the ice. D*mn it's cold!
    4) Go back in. It's still cold and I still can't see well enough.
    5) Go back out and scrape some more.
    6) It's not great but it's good enough. Still very cold. Drive.

Remote start that allowed me to get the heater and defroster going while
staying someplace warm would be quite useful.

  6. Yeah, I agree with Jim here. Typically to make a remote starter work on a
modern car you have to bypass the immobilizer. To do that they normally
tape the spare key near the transponder. It means basically you've disabled
    the security system.

  7. here in balmy winnipeg, the real question when you get into your car in the
    morning is:

"Which finger am I freezing off from the damn frozen steering wheel?" At -
30F last week, command start is great, and i would NOT recommend just driving
    away.

I have command start. I use it to start my car as I walk towards it in the
parking lot, to allow it to warm up sufficiently to drive. When its -30F,
usually its about a minute or 2. -15F and above I don't think it really
    matters.

It doesn't void the whole waranty, just any issues you have with
components related to the remote start.

The problem with a remote start system; is you have to defeat the
Imobilizer system to make it work.
And, yes aftermarket accessories (of any kind) will potentially void your
warranty if the installation of the aftermarket accessory is directly related
    to the specific problem.
Plan on paying a diagnostic fee up front for any problem that even
remotely (pun intended) smells like it's related to the aftermarket accessory
    you have had installed.
