Remove OEM Mirror from Glass

Discussion in 'General Motoring' started by SpongeBob SquarePants Rules!, Apr 10, 2004.

  1. Is there a best way to remove the mirror mount from the winshield? I read
somewhere to heat it up (hair dryer) and then pull it off. Not sure how to
clean the glue off either. I understand I have to be really careful. Thanks

  2. I would imagine you would unscrew the mirror from the mount and then use a
razor blade to remove the bracket

  3. Thanks Cap'n.

People vary from using a razor blade to not using one since it may scratch
the windshield glass. Some also suggest using a heat gun or hair dryer to
heat the area and then the mount will come off easier. I guess hair dryers
heat to 250 degrees which is much hotter than the inside of a car.

As they say, do it right the first time. I just rather not buy a new
    winshield.

If everything's clean, it's hard to imagine scratching glass with a
razor blade. If I wanted to experiment with heat, I might let the car
sit in the full sun for a couple of hours before going to work with the
razor blade (this depends a lot on where you live, of course).
