Replace front axle lug bolts

    Anyone have experience in replacing theses bolts? Its on a 2000 Civic
    hatch.
    While taking the right wheel off, one lug nut-bolt combo broke off;
    and every single one on the left side frozed up and broke off. This
    must be a manfac defect in parts siezing up. Never had an entire
    wheels worth of lug bolts/nuts break right off one after another.

    Back in the good days with large muscle cars equipped with discs, it
    was simple enough to take off the brake caliper; peel off the center
    bearing nut and everything came right out in your hand; making
    knocking these broken bolts out a simple tap with a 10 pound hammer.

    How goes it with a Civic and a CV axle? I don't want to mess with
    trying to get the halfshaft out to get to it. I have a clear whack at
    tapping the broken studs out front the front; but can it be done that
    way, or is there something behind the caliper preventing this?

    Finally: where do you find replacement lug bolts/nuts? Don't say
    DEALER ONLY.
    I know how they treasure their little parts bins as though they were
    mini gold mines.

    I would be willing to bet that the lug nuts were over tightened.
    If not the last time, then sometime in the past it was over tight-
    ened which made it weaker. Now, to solve the problem; I'm not
    sure if the 2000 civic uses the easy to replace rotor or "the pain
    in the butt" system Honda used the pain in the butt system, in the
    nineties. I worked on a 97 Accord with the pain in the butt type
    and you have to take the axle out out the hub and beat the life out
    of it. My 2001 accord, uses the 2 screw system (yea!!!!!).

    See if your hub looks like the one in the web page below. If so, bad
    news. This page was a lifesaver when I went to replace the rotors. I
    could not have done it with out this useful little bit of info. Unlike
    the
    doc, I did mine on the work bench.

    If it has two screws holding the rotor to the hub, just remove the rotor
    and it is
    easy.

    Here's a link to a page that shows an exploded diagram of the 2000 Civic
    front brake rotor, http://tinyurl.com/3xovq followed by a link to an

    From these diagrams, it looks like the rotor should be relatively easy to
    remove. However, the lug studs are pressed into the hub which is pressed
    into the steering knuckle along with the wheel bearing. I have not worked
    on a 2000 Civic, but it may be possible to knock the lug studs out of the
    hub without pressing hub free from the wheel bearing. If in doubt, you can
    purchase a factory service manual from http://www.helminc.com.

    bet you have lug nuts that are like caps.... i had these on a 83
    mustange years ago and they just about all broke off.... went to an auto
    parts store like Car Quest and the guy handed me the four i needed.. it
    had a stamp on the center of the stud that was "R" i asked him if that
    meant Right and he said yes.. i then told him it was for the left hand
    side of the car.. he laughed and said that it was for right hand
    thread.. he told me that they were all the same except for the ones that
    are marked "L" for left... i got a 2001 civic and have the cap type nuts
    also.. you got to be careful with the guys at the tire shops they put so
    much torque on the nuts that to get them off with the little tire wrench
    we have you cannot remove them.. when you turn the wrench it is not
    turning, but pushing down or up and not being driven in a complete
    circle ( i think the term would be not concentric??)... get a good cross
    shaped tire tool and you will not have any more broken bolts..
    you can probably go to any old time auto parts store(not the auto zone
    or the pep boys or advance auto parts)... and get them, pretty cheap,
    when i got them they were like 50 cents each(some years ago)........
    i would take a look at the back of the rotor to see if you have an open
    space behind there that you can turn the wheel to and then just hit them
    out with a large hammer and a punch.......

    "97 accord rotor" when I was working on that car a few months back.
    I played with the federal-mogul link and could not find any index and
    gave up.

    The link that you posted would help the fellow who needs to replace the
    lug studs by showing the exploded view of the 2000 civic much better
    than the one I posted as that link was for a different year accord. At the
    time I posted, I didn't not know which "rotor system" the 2000 civic used.
    But your other post cleared that up. I hope that honda would be sadistic
    enough to require removing the hub just to replace the stud.
