    Hello,
I went in for a oil change to the Honda dealer for my 2001 Accord LX.
The service guy said that the hoses were getting soft and recommended
to get all 9 of them replaced along with the thermostat. He quoted
about $620 for this job. It seems rather high.

Is this a typical job for cars that are 8-9 years old? Is the price
    right?

Also, he said the oil pan gasket was getting wet and would cost $240
to have it replaced. again it seems high. Any opinions here?

Are there other shops who do a decent job with hoses and oil gasket
and charge less? Honda does price matching to some extent.

    Pls advise. Thanks

chances are, this person is bullshitting you. yes, hoses can
deteriorate, but quality oem honda hoses last a good long time. some on
my civic are over 20 years old. oh, and they usually go hard, not soft
    - which is why they'd crack. same for the oil pan gasket.

get a second opinion, or even a third opinion, from a reputable
independent honda specialist and err on the side of caution. and $600
    for hoses is ridiculous.

Sounds like an opportunistic scam artist, i.e., you drive in, meaning
the engine is hot and the hoses therefore soft, and he points it out as
    a problem.
    Sure sounds it.

Sounds a lot like the guy who came to my front door yesterday in the dead of
winter (no leaves on the trees) and tried to convince me to let him cut "all
that dead wood" out of my trees".
