Replaced CV Joints, now I have no brake pressure

I had a semi-experienced mechanic friend change the CV joints and half
shafts of my 83 Honda Accord. I learned an important lesson: I should
do things myself, then my mistakes would be my mistakes.

Now I am hearing a grinding noise when slightly turning the steering
wheel and I am experiencing a loss of brake pressure. I can pump the
brakes and stop however in a short distance (1-2 blocks) there will be
no pressure at all. The power assistor is functioning properly, the
brakes are free of leaks and have been bled twice.

For 90 seconds or so he let the hub, rotor and brake caliper hang by
the brake line on the driver side. This side did have a bit of air in
the line when the brakes were bled.

The rotors now have noticeable wear lines which were not present
before the CV joints were changed. While spinning the rotor I noticed
that they can actually rock back and forth within the brake caliper.
I have not yet had a wheel alignment done because I have no breaks.
It seems that the brakes are pumped they make full contact with rotor
however after some steering the brake calipers are forced open (due to
the play in the position of the rotor) and will no longer make full
contact with the rotors on the next use. What causes the play in the
rotor?? The tie rod ends were also changed. Are the tie rods so far
off that they are allowing this play??

    thanks in advance,
Doug - 83 Accord with just under 200,000 miles

If he didn't put the rotor screws back, the rotor would rock back and forth
    when the wheel is off.

correct but if the axle nut was not tight the whole assembly would
rock regardlaess of lugnuts or rotor screws...

i've seen it too many times check it.

    Thanks for your responses.

First of all, yes I should give my friend more credit. It was getting
dark and a 2.5 hour job was turning 5 after a trip to parts store to
get the correct tie rod ends.

Second, we never removed the hubs or the rotor screws.

Third, I have only driven the car around the block a couple of times.
Once to get it home and second to see if the sound continued after
    filling the transaxle.
The spinal nuts seem tight, but that is the only place where there is
any play. Tie rods, sway bars, struts are all solid.
The CV joint and halfshaft move with the hub and rotor, I'll try
    tightening the axle nuts.

    Thanks again,
    Doug
