Replacing Accord factory stereo

Discussion in 'Accord' started by Chris D'Agnolo, May 28, 2004.

  1. My factory AM/FM cassette from my 96 Accord is biting the dust, sort of like
shorts out and back in, unpredictably. First off, any simple 'this is a
common honda problem' type of solutions?

Thought not. My main question is, if I pursue a used Honda factory AM/FM/CD
player will the plug in connector match right up or am I dreaming?

    Anybody know?

    TIA,
    Chris

A player from the same generation of accord should be plug compatible.
    I wouldn't expect a '81 or '03 player to work.

The connector changed in '98 or '99, as it did on the CRV in 99, and on
the odyssey in '98. So any CD /cassette (double DIN) will fit, as long
as it's from a Honda BEFORE the change.
carstereohelp.com will have pictures of the connector, and the exact
year it changed. I have pictures I can send too.

Be aware that CRV stereos have wonderful ORANGE backlighting....:)

The ones on eBay aren't terribly cheap, but its a plug-n-play solution.

I agree with GC. www.crutchfield.com might not be as cheap as Bestbuy or
some other store like that but they will include a new faceplate for the
dash and all the wiring so you don't have to cut the factory plugs off the
car. They also include very good instructions for removing the old radio and
installing the new one written especially for your car.

I'm gonna have to second GC and Chris on Crutchfield.com. I replaced the
factory AM/FM Cassette with a Kenwood AM/FM CD player in my 90 Accord.
Crutchfield supplied a faceplate, wiring harness, and instructions. Only
thing I needed was a couple of tools, like a short screwdriver. Now, I'll
admit it wasn't accomplished without some mild cursing, but I managed to get
everything in and working just fine in an afternoon. And my home audio
experience is normally limited to things like plugging in speakers and not
much else. I believe if you enter your vehicle type and select one of the
"EZ Fit" models it shouldn't be too difficult.
