the absolute finest grit you can find (200+)... soak it in water first
and keep it wet while using it.

You don't use sandpaper, you use "wet paper". Any automotive supply
store should have it. It's black, has a very fine grit and is
waterproof. To use it, get a garden hose and turn it on so there's
just a trickle of water coming out. Dribble the water over the area
you're applying the wet paper to and rub so that the water carries the
abraded paint away. For a small scrape one piece of wet paper will do
you. Because of the constant flow of water its grit doesn't plug up
the way sandpaper would. Feather the scrape so that all the scratches
are gone and an even band of undercoat is visible for half an inch in
all directions in the vicinity of the scrape. The idea is to get the
area smoothed off so gradually that the depression in the paint
    doesn't show.

if the scratch isn't real deep, you could lightly sand and buff buff
buff using finer and finer compound as you go. tedious...

  5. They make sandpaper up to 1200 grit, IIRC. Get the grey wet/dry
stuff, though, and use water as well.

1500 and 2000 grit are also available.
    Roughly equivalent to polishing compound
