Someone explain this....

  1. Seems like you are dead set on getting the DX. Why do you need more
No, I haven't made up my mind. I was just responding to assumptions that
dealer-installed a/c may somehow be less quality than factory installed.

I am obviously leaning towards the DX with leather because no one's really been
able to convince me the LX w/o leather is worth $2000 more.

If DX is all you need, DX is probably all you should get. Personally, I
couldn't stand the black trim, it takes a lot away from the looks of the
car. I ended up going with the EX 4cyl. cloth myself because I have always
wanted a sunroof on a car (and after 5K miles, I am extremely happy I did
get the EX). If you are going to get the DX with leather, I would look over
it to make sure it is a good quality installation as it is obviously
aftermarket. Also, do they warranty such aftermarket items? That would be
    a question I would ask.

And why should we try to convince you? Honda makes all these different trim
levels and accessories because people like different things. Personally, I
can't stand sitting on leather in a car. Having it be freezing cold in the
winter and sticky hot in the summer is not for me. Cloth all the way. The
sunroof and the EX trim was also worth it to me because it is what I liked,
I had to money to get it, and the extra money was really a moot point
considering how long I plan on keeping vehicle.

I guess you don't wear shorts in the summer.

Why do you needed people to convince you? The specs between DX and LX
are on Honda's web site. If you don't need all the extra features, why
do you even consider LX? It's seems that the leather is a selling point
for you. Which I hated. :).

An extra $1000 for dealer installed leather is not a good deal. If it
was manufactor installed, with high grade leather found on the German
cars, then $1000 would be a bargin.

Particularly when the dealer only pays $250 to $300 for the
    seat exchange.

Same here only EX's. But lets suppose you wanted a DX, why would you buy
a Honda? There are cheaper cars out there that are much nicer than a DX
Accord. IMHo you would be paying top dollar for a car that is very basic
inside and out. With Honda, you are paying a premium to get a make that
has become fairly premium. Why not consider a Mitsubishi? Or a Ford
Taurus? In that price range you will find a nicer car and a better
deal. There is no such thing as a "deal" Honda, so I would not approach
with the deal mentality. And while Accord reliability is good, it is
    not outstanding.

Maybe, but in the case of the VW's it's not just the seat, it's all the
trimmings on the door panels and other bits which adds to the entire
effect. The leather upgrades in the Honda's are plain in comparisons.

I'm not that familiar with the VW model you reference but I doubt
there is any VW model with leather anywhere but on the seating
surface. Even some lower level luxury cars have leather on the
seating surface only. It is true different brands use leather in
different places on different models. There is also a difference
in the type of leather use among models. Luxury cars use
expensive cafe skin while lessor models generally use much less
expensive split cow hide. The majority of vehicles, those below
luxury level have leather on the seating surface only, the
balance are manmade leather look alike materials, not leather.
When I was in retail venders would come to the dealership remove
the cloth seats and replace them with seats that they had
converted to leather on the seating surface. They would then take
the seats removed for the vehicle to be converted for the next
dealer. We paid $300 for cafe skin and
$200 to $250 for cow hide, installed. We then added $1,000 and
    $700 to the car price.

    OMG! What a genius!
Am I missing something from our village idiot?
But that's not what you just said...oof!
Really!? You mean to say there are different types of leather!? Wow...what
    insight!

    Are you a Jedi Master?
Uh oh...looks like the force has left you starfighter, and your back to
    spewing bullship.
Yea right...and when I went up on the Space Shuttle, I would always demand
    my S2000 seat.
And tell us Mikey...what dealership did this?
I paid $799 for snake skin, and $1000 for elephant, installed. We then added
    $14,000.00 to the car price.

You're the biggest idiot I have ever seen...

Does this particular DX Accord happen to have Side Airbags? If so, Honda
strongly discourages the installation of aftermarket seat covers of any kind. An
improperly constructed seat cover can seriously compromise the deployment path of
the Side Airbag. Otherwise, a/m leather is probably as good or, if they use top
quality materials (I doubt that), they could even be better than Honda leather
    seats...

All things considered, You should get the DX.
