Transmission fluid

Discussion in 'General Motoring' started by Dail Singleton, Mar 13, 2006.

  1. I have driven my 92 Civic about 29000 mi since I bought it and the 5
spd transmission oil had about 35000 mi according to the previous
owner's records. Yesterday I changed it using "Honda Genuine Manual
Transmission Fluid" from the dealer. It seems to shift noticibly more
smoothly, and I assume this must be combined with an improvement in gear
action. Just thought I would bring this to everyone's attention.

Good report. In the past here there has been some
controversy about whether to use genuine Honda MTF for these
older Hondas or the ordinary motor oil mentioned in the
    original owner's manuals.

Some or all of the more recent owner's and service manuals
comment that using the Honda MTF will result in better
    shifting.

I have seen enough to be persuaded to put the Honda MTF in
my 91 Civic for the first time at the next change.

Rule number one of buying a used car:

Just assume the previous owner never did the maintenance. Change all the
fluids according to the most recent data. I've owned several used
Hondas. You never (really) know if they used Honda fluids either. :-(

    *Very few* do.

Two years ago I bought the wife a new(ish) car to replace her much older
Toyota MR2. Over the course of a year I probably looked at a couple of
dozen cars and none of them showed any sign of any sort of regular
maintenance. Except one. The one I bought.

My mechanic told me that in his experience 90% of owners never even check
their engine oil level, much less actually change it regularly. And that
most of those who do check their car's fluids put the wrong stuff in.

Likely because your gearbox ( like mine ) has no filter, & fluid was
    very dirty.
Why does your title have just 2 words ? U must be thick & lazy, I
bet u never chk your old fluid's appearance.

  7. Ditto what Dail said.

I recently bought a 92 Accord that was, I suspect, running either
straight motor oil, or a generic gear lube. The Honda MTF has a notably
different texture and feel than what came out; thinner, with a slighty
'slimy' feel. Very slick. (The old oil was like-new clean.)

Running MTF, the shifter is MUCH smoother and easier to
move/shift/engage. The difference was surprising. If the transmission
is running as smoothly as it feels, the $13 (for 2 quarts) I left at the
    dealer was worth the price.

Wonder if I'd see a benefit from that in my '87? The manual just states
API Service Grade: SE or SF
    SAE30, 10W-30, 10W-40 or 20W-40 grade oil
